In today’s competitive world, academic excellence is not enough. Students need to have holistic development to stand out in the crowd and get noticed. Even the slightest of edge goes a long way in a bright future. Human values are essential for students today as they serve as a moral compass in an increasingly complex world.

Values like empathy, integrity, and respect, guide students in making ethical decisions, fostering harmonious relationships, and contributing positively to society. They provide a foundation for personal growth, social cohesion, and responsible citizenship. In an age of rapid technological advancement and diverse global challenges, instilling human values helps students navigate moral dilemmas, adapt to change, and become well-rounded individuals who can make meaningful contributions to their communities and the world at large.

To instill these values right from school days, Apeejay Education confers upon its students the Dr Stya Paul Award for Human Values. These awards are given every year to students who exhibit a deep sense of human values and a high level of integrity in his/her behaviour and conduct. Meet one such recipient of the award – Nia Meghan Lobo, a student of DP-I at Apeejay School International, Panchsheel Park.

In a candid interview, she talks about her reaction to getting this prestigious award.

How does it feel to have received this coveted award?

I am extremely honoured that I was shortlisted and given this award. I am truly glad not only about the fact that this award exists but also that it allows students to understand the importance of doing good deeds and why we should be inclined towards human values rather than just academics. At the end of the day, students are going to become leaders of the future and they must harbor such qualities.

What inspires you about Dr Stya Paul?

One of the things that I found truly inspiring was his dedication regardless of the challenges he faced and what the world thought of him. His work ethic and commitment to what he was truly passionate about is inspirational. As a student, there will always be questions about the choices that I make, for instance, the subjects I choose will always loom over me but being dedicated is something that I am passionate about regardless of the risks since they will always be there.

How do you juggle the modern complexities with human values?

You should look for the good in your challenges. For instance, it is easy to not be honest – we have ChatGPT. Morals, ethics, integrity, and real relationships with others are questioned. But because of today’s modern age and day, we can connect way more and understand each other’s culture and values. We learn to respect each other and connect better. Human connections made face-to-face are cherished longer. Since the world has become a global village, I believe it is an advantage.

How have the school and your parents inculcated these human values in you?

Since I was young, my parents have always taught me the importance of work ethics. They told me to stick to whatever I was passionate about irrespective of the challenges. At the same time, I must ask for help whenever needed. I have always been taught to respect others who are in the same workspace.

Are you part of any charity work or club at school?

The activities have always been a prominent element of our education. For instance, since I was in grade VIII, I have been doing active service be it creating websites or holding workshops where other students can learn values or be it cleaning Lodi Garden, or writing short stories on how people can be empathetic to others.
