Why are moot court competitions important for law students?

Why are moot court competitions for law students important? This is because, moot court is a smaller version of a real courtroom setup where legal processes and trials are held. And so when aspiring law students participate in such a competition, it allows them to hone key skills – such as research, thinking creatively, communication, to name a few – relevant to their profession.

Thus with the same intention, School of Legal Studies (SoLS) of Apeejay Stya University, Gurugram recently organised an Intra-School Moot court competition, wherein students participated with full zeal and enthusiasm.

The judge bench included Dr. Archana Vashishth, Head of Department, Mr. Anuranjan Sharma, Ms. Namita Verma, Ms. Krishna Choudhary, Dr. Sakshi and Ms. Priya Khatana from the School of Legal Studies.

For the competition, students of SoLS were asked to make a team of three and were given 15 days to prepare their memorials. There were 7 teams in total, 4 teams on behalf of Appellants and 3 teams on behalf of Respondents. Every team competed with a particular team based on the chit system.

During the event, students were given the preposition based on the Indian Contract Act, 1872. It also discussed a landmark case of Mohori Bibee v/s Dharmodas Ghose which was based on a minor’s contract.

While expressing her views on the same, Dr. Vashishth said, “Expertise is moot if confusion is not mitigated.”
