It is said that winning means a lot more than outpacing the opponent; it is about maximising one’s potential to the fullest of their ability. Inspired by this saying, Apeejay School International, South Delhi hosted an inter-school event, ‘ICARE’.

Themed “International Mindedness – Connecting to the world’, the competition catered to six Learner Profile attributes this year. Participants were marked based on characteristics such as care, open-mindedness, a balanced viewpoint, principles, risk-taking ability, and reflection. By possessing these, students have a greater chance of becoming international minded, responsible, caring and compassionate citizens. And eventually, one can contribute to making this world a better place to live in by taking meaningful actions.

The event witnessed participation of many eminent schools from across the country including Oakridge School, K.R. Mangalam Global School, Mount Abu School, Apeejay Schools and more. Various competitions were organised for students from Nursery to grade 5.

The Rhymesters for Nursery had to select and recite a poem. Dressed in colourful costumes, the Kindergarteners displayed their effervescent talent by dressing up like any famous personality who possessed one or more of these attributes. Through ‘Dress to Impress’, grade 1 students conducted research to find a cartoon character whom they thought demonstrates the chosen attributes. Then, they dressed up as that character to enact it.

Grade 2 students participated in ‘Amusing Aesops’, as they selected a story in which the main character demonstrates these attributes. Then they prepared and presented their stories using props. They talked about how they think the character demonstrated the selected attributes. Further, through ‘Jolly Jingle’ students composed and created a radio jingle to tell people why it is essential for every individual to have the Learner Profile attributes and how it would make them become a better human being.

‘Your Dream PM’ for grade 4 students allowed them to make and showcase a sketch-note imagining if they get an opportunity to become the Prime Minister of the country. The sketch-notes were all about identifying the issues and thinking of feasible solutions for them. Grade 5 students designed a newspaper after selecting a global issue. Further, they conducted research to find out recent news about the same and actions being taken on it. They were also required to write an editorial column mentioning how being principled, caring, reflective and balanced can help them resolve the issue.

The finalists stole the hearts of the audience with their thought-provoking and outstanding performances. Overall, the experience was enriching for students as they proved their mettle.

“This year’s edition saw participation from many reputed schools across India. Such competitions are essential to complement education for they provide opportunities for students to develop skills and abilities beyond the traditional classrooms.”
