Did You Know?

This is the longest bicycle in the world!

How Dutch cyclists rolled their way into the record books

Did you ever imagine riding a bicycle that’s longer than a school bus? Well, members of the Dutch cycling organisation, Mijl Van Mares Werkploeg, not only imagined it but brought this dream to life by building the longest bicycle in the world! This incredible two-wheeler measures a jaw-dropping 35.79 metres (117 feet 5 inches) and earned its place in the Guinness World Records 2016.

Building this monstrous bike was no small feat. The team used aluminum trusses (similar to those used in concert lighting rigs) to link both ends, ensuring the lengthy frame remains stable. However, despite its extraordinary length, this bike operates just like any other – with two wheels and no stabilisers. It’s a true marvel of engineering!

Operated by two individuals, one steers at the front while another pedals from the back. According to Frank Pelt, the group’s leader, riding the bicycle is surprisingly easy – just as long as you avoid turning any corners! The team successfully met their challenge and secured their spot in the Guinness World Records 2016.

But hold on, the record didn’t last forever! The bicycle baton was passed when Santos and the University of South Australia unveiled an even longer bicycle measuring 41.42 metres (135 feet 10.7 inches) in Adelaide, Australia, in 2015.

If you think this never-ending bicycle is fascinating, it’s just one of the many impressive records featured in Guinness World Records 2016.

Who knows what extraordinary feats will grace the pages of future editions?
