Gurinder Shahi entered his teenage years only recently. But the love for music and spirituality entered his heart at a much tender age. The class 9 boy from Apeejay School, Model Town in Jalandhar has recorded his first song and that too a devotional hymn in praise of Guru ji Shri Nirmal Singhji Maharaj, who is also popularly called ‘Shukrana Guruji’ and ‘Dugri Wale Guruji’.
Gurinder’s song ‘Jai Guru ji’ has crossed 2000 views at YouTube and the young singer is already focussed on recording his second devotional track soon. In a fun chat with the budding musician, we learn about his journey into music and why ‘bhakti’ is very important for him. Read edited excerpts:
Gurinder, since when have you been into music?
I have been learning music for the past 6 years. I started when I was 7 years old and I feel more in touch with everything around me, there is music everywhere.
How did the journey begin?
It started when I met my music Guru Ustaad Navi Singh ji. He lives near to my place and everything changed for me when I became his student.
So which all music instruments can you play?
I can play the Harmonium, Tabla, Keyboard and also the casio. I sing majorly though.
And do you compose and write the lyrics ?
My Ustaad ji writes and composes while I sing. But I am also gaining knowledge into composition and writing.. I will do it in the future.
But what inspired you to sing a song of tribute for Gurui ji?
My mom was a devotee of Guru ji. Seeing her over the years, the divine spirit touched me as well and I have been a devotee since the past one year. Recently, I expressed my wish to my ustaad to create something for Guru ji as a tribute. Then he wrote and composed this song that I have sung.
How does your school support your musical journey?
My school music teacher supports me so much. She was so happy to see my video and sent the video everywhere across her social circle. I have been learning from her since a small age. She appreciates and encourages me a lot.
That’s lovely! So what will the next song be on?
It will also be on Guru ji. I haven’t thought of a name yet but work is going on, upon the song.
