Education is highly valued in India as a means to secure a good future. Parents believe that a good school provides not just academic knowledge but also the right environment for overall development. The school a child attends can significantly influence their chances of getting into top universities, both in India and abroad.

The desire for children to become independent is a significant factor for many parents when choosing a school. This preference reflects a broader understanding of education’s role in preparing children not just academically, but also for life’s various challenges. Schools that encourage independence help students develop a range of skills and attributes that are crucial for their personal and professional lives.

This was important for parents like Abhinav Vikram and his wife Vinita, whose twin daughters – Ira and Aakira study in PYP-1 (class I) at Apeejay School International, Panchsheel Park.

In a candid interview, the father talks about why he chose IB over the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) for his daughters among other things.

Why did you choose Apeejay for your daughters?

My daughters were initially in a preschool with Rhythms Kinderworld in Greater Kailash II which made it a natural transition to an Apeejay School. I preferred them to study with an IB curriculum, valuing its comprehensive approach to education.

What led you to choose an IB school over others, like CBSE schools?

Although I acknowledge that CBSE schools have a commendable syllabus, I felt it was more inclined towards rote learning. My research and discussions with teachers highlighted that the IB curriculum focuses more on practical learning, like presentations, which I found crucial for fostering independence and readiness for higher education.

Can you share some experiences of your daughters in their current IB school?

Despite being in PYP-1, my daughters have already completed several presentations, largely on their own. I assist minimally, perhaps with drawings, but the content and delivery are their efforts. This kind of hands-on learning approach was a significant factor in my choice.

How does the school support students with its rigorous IB curriculum?

The school emphasises in-class learning, minimising homework to ensure students spend most of their time at home on activities other than academics. At most, my daughter can complete their homework in about 20 minutes. This approach contrasts significantly with the extensive homework typically assigned in CBSE schools. This leaves them time to take up other activities.

What has been your impression of the teachers and staff at the school?

The level of attention to detail from the teachers and staff is remarkable. Their proactive communication and understanding of each child’s needs and behaviours reassure me of their dedication to the student’s overall development.

There have been times during Parent-Teacher Meetings when I have gone to ask a few questions. But before I can ask my questions, they have already addressed my queries. That is how attentive the teachers are when it comes to the students. They understand each student, what they need, and areas of improvement if any.

How have your daughters benefited from the IB curriculum?

A standout benefit is the reduction in their fear of public speaking and making mistakes in front of others. The small class sizes and inclusive activities ensure each child actively participates and gains confidence, which I believe is a significant advantage over the more traditional, larger classroom settings of CBSE schools.

How involved are your daughters in extracurricular activities?

They participate in a variety of sports and creative activities, both within and outside school. The schedule allows them ample time for hobbies such as Brazilian jiu-jitsu and drawing, highlighting the balanced lifestyle encouraged by the school.

What advice would you give to parents considering an IB school for their children?

I strongly recommend opting for an IB school. The benefits of a focused curriculum and smaller class sizes significantly outweigh the traditional advantages of CBSE schools. The personalised attention and comprehensive development it offers are unparalleled.
