A heartfelt letter is a piece of emotion that expresses how you truly feel. And this Father’s Day, Sumit Pandey, a B Pharma student with School of Pharmaceutical Sciences at Apeejay Stya University (ASU), wrote a special poem for his father. Sumit’s poem lovingly encapsulates an emotion of a son for his father. 21-year-old Sumit, who shares a love-hate relationship with his father, through this special poem ‘A Confession’ expressed his love and gratitude for the man, who he looks up to for advice and encouragement, whether he is strict or lenient. Read on the interview of this week’s Scholar-Journalist winner in which he talks about his writing journey.

Why did you decide to dedicate a poem to your father?

The relationship between my father and me is a love-hate one; sometimes love and sometimes dialogues. (laughs). I think my father has lost faith in me as I failed to crack the NEET entrance exam for three years consecutively, and couldn’t get a seat in a government medical college. However, he always supports me and my decisions. Thus, it made me write  ‘A Confession’. A father’s role in the lives of his child is critical and this poem narrates that emotion.

How much time did it take you to pen down this letter?

I don’t remember exactly how long it took me to write the poem. But I kind of released all my pent-up emotions. These emotions were in my heart from the time I had entered adulthood.

Do you like to read books or write articles? What kind of books do you prefer?

I love to read books, but not every book can get my attention. But usually, I prefer reading books in Hindi. Also in English, I love to read books on Science fiction.

Why do you think building writing skill is important for students?

Writing helps me to portray my thoughts in an easy way. Also, it’s helpful in saying things which we can’t say to anyone sometimes in words. Thus having a skill for writing can prove to be very useful. This skill also helps me to write effective answers in exams. Also, my parents don’t know that I write poetry.(Smiles)
