There are many theories surrounding the ill-effects of tobacco. I am certain you too must have heard that one cigarette snatches away 7 minutes of life. While this may or may not be true, what is scientifically proven to be true is that tobacco is hazardous to human health. The Government has been doing its bit to increase awareness through advertisements, slogans and posters. To raise further awareness regarding right to health, The Directorate of Education mandated the taking of a pledge by school students to not only abstain from consuming tobacco, but also for spreading awareness amongst family and friends.
In sync with this thought, Apeejay School, Panchsheel Park recently held an event to observe World Tobacco Day and make their students aware of the harmful effects of tobacco. Students across classes 10 to 12 came together for the cause and diligently took the following pledge in the presence of the school Principal and other faculty members.

The students affirmed, ‘On this occasion of World No Tobacco Day, we take a pledge that we shall never use or consume any kind of tobacco products in my life. We shall motivate all our family members, friends and acquaintances also to not use any tobacco products. We shall also contribute to the protection of my environment from the use of tobacco products.’
With the above mentioned pledge, all students effectively stood for the theme for this year’s World No Tobacco Day: Grow Food, Not Tobacco.

Expressing her thoughts, Fiza Masoun of class 10 said, “Tobacco harms not just our health, but also the health of farmers and most importantly the planet’s health.”
She further added, “This campaign encourages governments to end tobacco growing subsidies and use the savings to support farmers to switch to more sustainable crops that improve food security and nutrition.”

Another student Saanvi Puri also reasserts this view as she mentions, “Saying no to tobacco is saying yes to life. It is our duty as responsible citizens to save lives by making everyone aware of the threats tobacco possess. I firmly say no to tobacco!”
Indeed, if all members of the young generation start thinking in this direction, the world will soon be free of all unhealthy habits.
