Penguin Random House envisions AI streamlining book sales

Published

on

Penguin Random House CEO Nihar Malaviya expressed optimism about the potential of AI to streamline book sales without the need for additional hires, as reported by The New York Times this week.

The profile of Malaviya, head of one of the ‘Big Five’ global publishing giants dominating the English-language mainstream publishing sector, highlighted his focus on growth. The company underwent a workforce reduction of around 60 employees last year, along with voluntary buyouts, as part of its strategic approach.

In its pursuit of expansion, Penguin Random House attempted to acquire fellow Big Five publisher Simon & Schuster in 2020. However, the antitrust concerns led to the deal being blocked, resulting in its abandonment approximately two years later.

The integration of AI in book production is also gaining traction among publishers in India. Harper Collins India CEO Ananth Padmanabhan noted last year that AI narrators could accelerate the release of translated novels.

While publishers globally explore the use of large language models and associated AI tools, some readers express concerns about the potential displacement of creators and the automation of book acquisitions in an industry already criticised for its lack of diversity.
