Read edited excerpts:
Himanaya, congratulations on your achievement! How did you feel when you found out you qualified at the district level?
Thank you! It was quite overwhelming. Competing with so many talented individuals was more about learning than just winning. I was thrilled to be in the top 25%, but it also reminded me how important it is to respect and learn from others’ views. Seeing different perspectives was really enlightening.
What were the topics you debated at the district and state levels?
At the district level, the topic was “The role of soft power in diplomatic relations,” and I argued against the motion. For the state level, the topic was “Artificial intelligence can exacerbate global inequality in geopolitical power,” and I was for the motion. These topics were challenging but also very interesting.
How did you prepare for these debates?
For the district level, I had a week to prepare. I started by researching the topic since it was new to me. I spent an hour every day after school learning my script and understanding different viewpoints. For example, I researched how hard power was used by historical figures like Hitler and Saddam Hussein, and how it led to cultural misunderstandings. For the state level, I prepared intensively by reading articles, watching debates, and using quotes like “Knowledge is having the right answer, intelligence is asking the right question” to highlight how AI could increase global inequality. This preparation helped me craft a strong argument.
Who motivated you to participate in these competitions?

My mom and my English teachers at Apeejay played a big role. They encouraged me and supported me emotionally, especially when I felt uncertain. They always emphasised participation and representing our school. I remember my English teacher saying, “Just give it your best shot. It’s not just about winning but also about learning.”
Balancing schoolwork and debate preparations must have been challenging. How did you manage it?
It was manageable because I scheduled my time effectively. After finishing my homework and studying, I dedicated two hours in the evening to debate preparation. I also had yoga classes, but I rescheduled them to fit in my debate practice. It was tough at times, but I made sure to prioritise my tasks and stay organised.
What makes Apeejay Svran Global School special to you?
Apeejay focuses on nurturing every student’s talent, not just the toppers. The school offers many opportunities like grammar competitions, poem recitations, extempore speeches, and story writing contests. These activities helped build my confidence and skills over the years. The school’s supportive environment encourages us to explore our interests and develop our abilities.
How has participating in these competitions helped you grow?
Participating in various competitions improved my speaking and thinking skills. It also boosted my self-confidence and made me an active listener. I remember my first competition where I was very nervous, but the continuous support and feedback from my teachers were invaluable. They gave me tips on how to improve and encouraged me to keep participating.
What are your future plans? Do they involve debating?

My primary interest lies in art and archaeology, but I will definitely use the skills I’ve gained from debating in discussions and problem-solving in life. Debate remains a secondary option for me. I believe the critical thinking and public speaking skills I’ve developed will be useful in any field I choose.
What advice would you give to other students who want to excel in debating?
Be confident and participate in competitions that interest you. Don’t compare yourself to others, as it can lead to anxiety. Practise writing and grammar, and make reading a habit. Start with a page a day and gradually increase it. Also, try to learn from each debate, regardless of the outcome. Every experience adds to your growth.
How has Apeejay helped you handle nervousness and stress during competitions?
The school has taught us various techniques to manage stress, like meditation and journaling. Our teachers are supportive and often share tips to help us stay calm. I personally handle nervousness by imagining that I’m alone on stage and just need to get through my speech. This mental trick helps me stay focused and calm.
Any final thoughts on how Apeejay has shaped your journey?
Apeejay has prepared us not just for competitions but for life. The school emphasises ethical understanding, awareness of different career paths, and life lessons. The supportive and fun environment created by our teachers makes learning enjoyable and effective. I appreciate how the school celebrates different cultures and respects all students, fostering a sense of community and belonging.
