The Education Minister, Dharmendra Pradhan, announced in Parliament that the National Testing Agency (NTA) will shift its focus exclusively to conducting higher education entrance exams starting in 2025. The decision means the NTA will no longer oversee recruitment exams, marking a significant change in its mandate.

The Minister also outlined the government’s vision to modernise the exam system by adopting advanced technology. Plans are underway to implement a tech-driven, computer-adaptive testing system for future entrance exams. Discussions are ongoing with stakeholders to ensure a seamless transition to these innovative testing formats.

Regarding the format of NEET-UG, the Minister clarified that ongoing consultations with the Health Ministry are underway to determine whether the exam will continue to be administered in pen-and-paper mode or transition to an online format. He confirmed that the Common University Entrance Test (CUET)-UG will continue as an annual exam.

The restructuring plan for 2025 includes the creation of 10 additional posts to strengthen the NTA’s capabilities. These posts will enhance the agency’s efficiency and ability to conduct large-scale exams securely.

The announcement comes amid rising concerns over exam integrity, following allegations of malpractice, including a purported NEET-UG paper leak and multiple exam cancellations. Addressing these concerns, Pradhan emphasised that these reforms are part of the government’s broader efforts to streamline the exam process and bolster its credibility.

The government’s move to modernise and restructure the NTA is seen as a proactive step to address such challenges and ensure a secure, transparent examination framework.
