With her husband working in another country, a major ask for the parents was that their child study in an English medium school. Since the family stays in Saket, they looked at all the top schools in the area and chose Apeejay School, Saket because they had heard that primary education at this school is excellent.

“I didn’t specifically choose Apeejay School because it is near to where I live but purely on merit and what I had heard from people. I visited the school and interacted with the staff and the administration. I felt that this school would be a perfect fit for my son,” Aisha Jabin Syed said, whose son, Mumammad Umar Akbar, has recently gone into class 1.

Excerpts from the interview

What was your impression when you visited the school for the first time?

I was impressed with what I saw. When I interacted with the staff, they were extremely cordial and made me feel at ease. Even the admission process was smooth. The coordinator had taken a small test for my son. He did well in all the subjects barring one. But I don’t think they were expecting perfection from such a small child.

How has his learning been this last year?

I have to say that the teachers at this school are excellent. When my son was in KG, Heena ma’am was extremely helpful. I told her that while my son has studied online, he has never been to a formal school set up. But she assured me that there was nothing to worry about. She was always there to help me. This was also the first time my son was going to the school and would fall ill frequently. His teacher would send all the work that was done in the class so that Umar didn’t lag behind when he joined back.

How is he coping in class 1?

His class teacher is Nikita ma’am. She is just as good as Heena ma’am. While there is a lot of theory and writing work, she also uses interactive methods to teach which my son loves. In fact, he prefers to learn via a fun method rather than study from the book. The good thing about this school is that they have a balance – theory and interactive teaching. In school, they are made to do writing work. At home, for homework, they are given fun activities to do.

What is the teaching methodology?

I am happy with how the teachers are pacing everything out. I had a concern – my son speaks in English at home but once he started going to the school his English speaking skills have taken a hit since the peers speak in Hindi. I raised this concern with Nikita ma’am and she told me not to worry and once the schools reopen things will be back on track.

Do you get regular feedback from teachers?

Yes, parent-teacher meetings are held regularly and I attend each one of them. If there were issues like COVID-19, Zoom meetings were organised. Also, the feedback is constructive and if I have some concerns, they are addressed.

What are some of the changes in the school?

He has become friendly and interactive. The school environment is really helping him cope with whatever is happening around him so that is good. The best part is that the teachers are imparting knowledge in a manner that he loves.

Would you recommend Apeejay to other parents?

I do this all the time. I am very happy with the school and the way the teachers are taking care of my son’s learning.
