Math Made Easy: ‘Embrace mistakes as opportunities for growth’
Struggling students can focus on mastering easy concepts and scoring portions of the syllabus, says a Math educator at Model Town

The perceived difficulty of math among students in India, as in many other countries, can be attributed to a combination of factors. It’s important to note that individual experiences and perceptions can vary, and not all students find math challenging. Due to societal expectations and the importance placed on academic success, students may develop a fear of failure in Math. This fear can be a significant barrier to learning and problem-solving.
Addressing these challenges requires a comprehensive approach involving improvements in teaching methods, curriculum design, educational resources, and a shift towards fostering a positive attitude towards learning math. Encouraging a deeper understanding of mathematical concepts and promoting critical thinking can contribute to making math more accessible and enjoyable for students.
According to Jyoti Khanna, PRT (Math), who teaches classes II to VI at Apeejay School, Model Town, there are several things that students who are struggling in Math to get good passing marks in the subject. “There are several resources and tools that are available that students can access. These can not only help them solve their problems, but the apps can also help students clear their doubts since some of the apps give step-by-step explanations,” Khanna said and answered a few questions that can help students improve their understanding of Math.
Are there any specific learning resources or tools that students can follow to improve their understanding of Math?
Yes, there are several helpful apps and tools available for students to enhance their grasp of mathematics. For instance, apps like Photomath allow users to scan Math problems and receive instant solutions with step-by-step explanations. Other apps like Buzzmath cater to students from elementary to middle school. Cuemath can be used by students in classes II to XII, respectively. This app can be used by students who are good in the subject and also those who are struggling. Additionally, there is a mathematical software programme – GeoGebra — that combines algebra, geometry, spreadsheet, statistics, and analysis in a single user-friendly package. Most of these apps are free, providing students with the option to download and install them on their mobile devices or computers for use.
How can we promote a positive outlook towards Math among students?
To foster a positive mindset towards mathematics, it is essential to acknowledge and embrace mistakes as opportunities for growth. Encouraging students when they make mistakes helps them understand that errors are a natural part of the learning process. Additionally, assigning open-ended math tasks or asking students to create their own Math problems can be beneficial in developing a positive attitude toward the subject.
What interactive activities or games can make learning Math more enjoyable for students?
Various interactive games and activities can make learning math more fun. Examples include playing hopscotch with mathematical operations, using mathematical models or kits, constructing homemade board games, and incorporating mathematical riddles and crosswords in the classroom. These engaging methods help students enjoy the learning process.
What role do parents play in ensuring their children understand and do not fear Math?
Parents can actively support their children in understanding Math by providing guidance, sharing tricks or shortcuts, and fostering a positive mindset. Parents must avoid instilling fear of the subject in their children and instead encourage them when they face difficulties. Reinforcing the idea that making mistakes is part of the learning journey helps build confidence and resilience.
