We all have dreams and aspirations. But not all of us can realise them; sometimes family’s financial status makes it difficult for children to pursue their dreams. But it doesn’t deter them from working hard, changing their trajectory, and trying to do well in the path chosen. Meet Ravinder Singh, an alumnus of Apeejay Stya University (ASU), who did his DPharma (batch 2018-19).

“I took Science (medical) in class XI hoping that I would be able to take the NEET exam. But destiny had other plans for me. I realised that if I didn’t get through a government medical college, I would not be able to study medicine. After I passed out of class XII, with my dreams somewhat shattered, I still realised that I could look for options in the medical field. That is when someone suggested that I enroll in a pharmacy programme,” Singh said.

Excerpts from the interview.

How and why did you choose Apeejay Stya University?

Once I understood that I would not be able to pursue medicine and become a doctor, I started looking for other avenues and options that would open doors where I could start earning from the word go. I live in Haryana – Sohna-Palwal. I had heard of ASU and the various programmes they had to offer. When I learnt about the DPharma course, I immediately enrolled.

How were your campus days?

My batch is 2018-20. I was lucky that my course was almost over before the COVID-19 pandemic ensured that everything shifted online. A couple of months were spent online but the majority of the time was spent on campus. I had good friends and enjoyed campus life. Several events were organised which we attended and even participated in.

How was the faculty?

They were very good, especially Manoj sir. The way he taught was so good. He ensured that his lectures were interactive and this made learning so easy. He was also a very good person and was always ready to help in case we had any problems. I wish we had more professorts like him. A good teacher can change how the student learns and retain knowledge.

Where are you working at present?

I am working in the retail sector and working with Apollo Pharmacy near my home. It is nice to know that some of the things that we were taught at ASU are coming in handy in my present job. It gives me an edge over the others. My boss knows that I have good knowledge about different medicines and salts.

Did you get this job through campus placement?

Not directly. I had registered my name and the campus placement cell told me about various openings. I made my CV and prepared for the interview on my own. I am glad I did this since it has instilled confidence in me that I can do things independently and that there is no need for someone to hold my hand and guide me.

What are your plans for the future?

There would have been a time when I would have jumped up and given ideas that drive me. But I have learnt that one needs to be cautious with how you tread forward. Ideally, I would like to work for another few years and then have my retail shop. But at present, I am happy where I am supporting my family financially.

What are some of the dangers of giving medicines without a prescription?

There are always pitfalls when you buy medicine over the counter. But one also has to do a reality check when one lives in a place like Haryana. Not everyone can afford to go to the doctor, pay his fee and then buy medicine. Most people come to us and ask us to give them medicine. I am just happy that I know to give them the correct medicine without it having adverse effects.

Do you recommend ASU to others?

All the time. There are a few school kids in my area and once in a while when we have a conversation about careers and opportunities, I tell them that ASU is the perfect stepping stone to better things in life.
