Some students are clear about what they want to do. Others know what they don’t want to do. This makes it easy for them to eliminate several career options. The same was true for Shalu Karhana, who did her DPharma at Apeejay Stya University.

“I took Science in class XII (medical). However, I was not very sure whether I wanted to sit for the NEET exam. After my Senior Secondary Board exam, someone suggested that while I waited to make up my mind, why not enroll for a course in DPharma. I joined the course for one year in 2019. Once I started attending the classes I enjoyed every bit of the programme,” Shalu said.

Excerpts from an interview.

How and when did you hear about Apeejay Stya University?

Unfortunately, even though I live in Sohna, I had not heard of Apeejay Stya University (ASU). It was when I was mulling over my options and what to do after class XII, a family member told our family about ASU and the programme in Pharma. Since I was still not convinced I opted for a one-year diploma. Once I joined, it was so easy for me to attend the classes since the institute is so near to my home.

How was the faculty?

It was excellent. I think the best teacher that I had was Manoj sir. He was very good with the way he would teach. The best part was that besides being a fantastic faculty, he was a very good person and was always there for you willing to help you if you ever got stuck.

What was the teaching methodology?

It was really good. I had not expected the programme to be so interesting or to be taught in such a nice manner; it was definitely in tune with the industry’s needs. Yes, there were theory classes where we learnt about the various medicines and salts. But we were also given a lot of practical knowledge. This proved to be very good for my learning curve.

Where are you working at present?

I am not. I have made up my mind and decided that being a doctor is not something that I want to do but I still want to work in the hospital. I am now pursuing Bsc Nursing. I am glad that I did DPharma. Some of the things that I learnt back then are coming in handy in my present course.

How were your campus days?

I had so much fun. I had a good set of friends and that made all the difference. While I didn’t participate in any of the events that were organised I was always there as a spectator. There was one festival – rangoli – in which I participated; it was such a blast!

You were reluctant to take this course. Would you recommend ASU today?

Yes. I can say with a lot of conviction that this is a very good institute to study pharma, at least. I don’t know about the other courses. But I can say with confidence that the DPharma programme is excellent here.
