The proximity of a school to home is one of the top asks that parents have when they are looking for a school for their child. This is because parents always want to be able to reach the child and the school in the shortest possible time in case there is an emergency.

The second thing that parents look for in a school is its reputation and the brand value that it has. So, when the time came for Inaaya to go to school, her mother Sarita Sharma left no stone unturned when it came to choosing the perfect school for her daughter.

“When I was looking for a school for my daughter, I looked at so many things. Proximity to home was a big concern. I am working. So, I wanted a school where it was possible for my family to easily drop and collect Inaaya from school. Then my brother suggested why not Apeejay School, Saket? He is an alumnus of the school. I agreed since we live so near to the school,” Sharma said.

Excerpts from an interview.

How is your daughter doing now with offline classes?

She is doing very well. She has now gone into class 1. So, she is very excited to start the new session in a new class. She has always been a bright child. In her previous class, she also participated in almost all the activities that the school held or organised. She was happy and that made me happy.

“The teachers are very good. I am working and sometimes, it gets late. My daughter manages to do the work that has been assigned on her own. I just have to check if it has been done correctly. So, that way the teachers are excellent”

How are the teachers and the teaching methodology?

I have no reason to complain. They are all very good. Like I said I am working and sometimes, it gets late. She manages to do the work that has been assigned on her own. I just have to check if it has been done correctly. So that way the teachers are excellent. Even Inaaya says that her class teacher, who has since then left, is very good. This is important. If the child comes home gushing about the teacher, they are definitely doing something right.

You said you are working. Some tips on how to spend quality time with your child.

It is not always easy since there are days when I get late. But there is one thing that I always do – I always spend time with her even if it is for an hour. Kids are resilient and they understand that the mother has to go to work. But I have an excellent support system at home. So it is not as if she is alone or lacking affection. Also, when I am home on a Sunday, the day is dedicated to her. We do lots of activities together.

It is quality over quantity. I always listen to what she has to say about her day and what she has learnt. For a child that is important – that the parent has time to hear them out.

How important is it for parents to ensure rules are followed right from the time they are toddlers?

I would say that parents must ensure that kids form good habits right from the start. They must know and understand the rules and boundaries that each family has. This will help them as they grow older. They will be more disciplined and this will help them when they start their professional journey. Take an example. Good sleep is important. The toddler must be told that bedtime is 10:30 pm and there are no exceptions to the rule unless it is a weekend.

How would you rate Apeejay?

I would say that it is an excellent school, at least for my daughter. It has a good balance between academics and extracurricular activities. At the end of the day what matters is whether my daughter is happy. If she likes going to school at this young age, everything that the school is doing must be good.
