Graduating in 2021 from School of Management Sciences (SoMS), Apeejay Stya University (ASU), Abhishek Sharma recently got hired in the multinational corporation Accenture through a campus placement. Beginning with a month-long internship at the company, he was shortly selected as a Finance Process Associate. In an interview, Sharma talks about the top skills desirable for acquiring a cutting edge in the disciplines of Finance and Accounting.

Knowledge is Primary

As far as I have understood the field, it is all about the knowledge you can gain. The basics of accounting should be on your tips, only then it would be an upward journey for you. The classes I took at the university, and the course which is in integration with ACCA (Association of Chartered Certified Accountants), helped a lot because it made me industry-ready. During my internship, I was aware about the International Accounting Standards which may have set me apart from the crowd.

Work on your communication

In any profession, a person must be able to communicate and present their ideas smartly. I recall while joining the university, I was shy and never used to speak much. However, as I started my course, we were required to give presentations and work in teams which helped me gain confidence in my professional life.

Build additional skills

In the field of Accounting and Finance, MS Excel skills are vital. So, regularly practice the software so you can perform tedious assignments efficiently and know the commands that could enable you to finish your tasks quickly.

Time management is vital

For young students as well as professionals, time management is crucial. Therefore, I would like to say that enjoying your time at the university is okay, but think about a way forward and keep exploring. Once out of university, you need to focus on your career and be prepared for the corporate world. So, have a realistic approach and manage your time.

Don’t forget soft skills

A person must have a growth mindset to excel in this line of work. At multinationals such as Accenture, this is the primary quality they seek in an employee since it is a company all about learners. If someone wants to intern or work at such big companies, then they should focus on consistent learning.
