The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has released a fresh circular regarding the implementation of the R3 language rule in affiliated schools, in line with the recommendations of the National Council of Educational Research and Training and the National Curriculum Framework for School Education (NCFSE) 2023. The new policy will come into effect from the academic session 2026-27, with the R3 language being introduced from Class VI onwards.
According to the circular, all affiliated schools are required to finalise and upload their language combinations under the R1, R2, and R3 framework on the OASIS portal. While several schools have already completed the process, CBSE noted that some institutions are yet to submit their language details or have uploaded entries that do not align with the prescribed policy norms.
To ensure smooth and uniform implementation across schools, CBSE has directed institutions to complete or correct their submissions by May 31, 2026. The board emphasised that schools must strictly adhere to the three-language structure and ensure that at least two of the selected languages are native Indian languages.
The circular further stated that textbooks for scheduled languages recognised under the Constitution of India will be made available on the websites of NCERT and CBSE before July 1, 2026. This step is aimed at helping schools prepare teaching-learning materials and academic plans in advance of the new session.
For schools opting for non-scheduled languages, CBSE has advised the use of SCERT textbooks or other state-approved resources. However, the curriculum and pedagogy must remain aligned with the competency-based learning approach recommended under NCFSE-2023.
The move is expected to strengthen multilingual education and promote linguistic diversity among students across CBSE-affiliated schools.
