Since its launch, AI tools like ChatGPT have significantly impacted content creation, sparking debates in educational institutes about their use. Researchers explored the link between adolescents’ executive functioning (EF) and the use of generative AI chatbots for schoolwork.

The study, published in Frontiers in Artificial Intelligence, found that students with EF challenges particularly benefit from these tools, using them to complete assignments more effectively.

The research comprised two studies: one with 385 adolescents aged 12 to 16 from primary schools and another with 359 students aged 15 to 19 from a high school in Sweden. Results showed that older students, who often have more complex assignments, used AI tools more frequently (53%) compared to younger students (15%). The studies also highlighted that students with EF challenges found generative AI significantly more useful for schoolwork than their peers.

The researchers emphasised the importance of setting clear boundaries between using AI as a learning aid and cheating. They recommended responsible AI use for research, idea generation, and comprehension of complex concepts, with educators providing guidelines for ethical use.

Ultimately, the study underscores the need for balanced integration of AI in education to support students, particularly those with EF difficulties, while maintaining academic integrity and fostering genuine learning.
