Curiosity, creativity, and a passion for storytelling came together as Aanya Malhotra of Class IX, Apeejay School, Pitampura, participated in the Times NIE Summer Journalism Programme held at DPS RK Puram. The two-day programme offered students a unique opportunity to explore the fascinating world of journalism and gain first-hand insights into how news is gathered, written, and published.
Designed to introduce young learners to the fundamentals of media and communication, the programme provided an engaging platform for aspiring journalists to understand the workings of the newspaper industry. Through a series of interactive sessions, discussions, and practical activities, participants were introduced to the essentials of reporting, news writing, interviewing techniques, and the responsibilities of journalists in today’s fast-paced information landscape.
One of the highlights of the programme was the opportunity to learn about the complete journey of a newspaper, from the identification of a newsworthy event to the final publication process. Students discovered how reporters, editors, photographers, and designers collaborate to ensure accurate and impactful storytelling. The sessions also emphasised the importance of credibility, objectivity, and ethical reporting in journalism.

Hands-on exercises encouraged participants to think critically, ask meaningful questions, and develop their observation and writing skills. These activities not only enhanced their understanding of journalistic practices but also helped build confidence in expressing ideas clearly and effectively.
Beyond technical skills, the programme fostered an appreciation for the role of journalism in society. Students gained a deeper understanding of how newspapers inform communities, shape public opinion, and serve as a vital link between events and readers.
Reflecting on the experience, Aanya found the programme both enriching and inspiring. The exposure to real-world journalistic practices broadened her perspective and sparked a greater interest in the field of media and communication.
Educational excursions and enrichment programmes like these play a crucial role in extending learning beyond the classroom. By offering practical exposure and opportunities for exploration, they help students discover new interests, develop essential life skills, and become informed, responsible citizens.
