Students of Apeejay School, Pitampura, participated in an international video conference organised by Generation Global on Zoom. The session brought together students from India and Nigeria for a dialogue on the theme of Identity and Belonging.
The conversation was significant because it gave students a chance to look beyond familiar surroundings and understand how young people from different countries think about who they are. Identity is shaped by many things. Family, language, culture, school, community, traditions, and personal experiences all play a role. The session helped students see this through real conversations, not just classroom discussion.
The conference began with an introduction by moderators from Generation Global. They encouraged participants to listen with respect, speak openly, and engage with different points of view. Students from both countries introduced themselves and shared the cultural, social, and personal influences that shape their lives.

A meaningful exchange
As the discussion moved forward, students spoke about belonging within their families, schools, communities, and nations. They shared how traditions, languages, customs, and values give them a sense of connection.
Students from Nigeria spoke about community bonds and cultural pride. Students from India reflected on the country’s diversity of languages, traditions, and beliefs. They shared how this diversity strengthens unity and mutual respect.
The interactive format allowed students to ask questions and respond thoughtfully. This made the session more than a cultural exchange. It became a space where participants could notice both differences and similarities.
Learning beyond borders
The conference concluded on a positive note, with students expressing appreciation for the opportunity to interact with peers from another country. The event promoted intercultural understanding, empathy, respect for diversity, and global citizenship.
What stood out was the larger learning curve. When students listen to stories from another culture, they begin to understand their identity better, too. Such conversations help young learners grow into more aware, respectful, and connected individuals.
