Meet Smera Sachdeva, a dynamic MYP-5 student of Apeejay’s IB School, Apeejay School International, Panchsheel Park, whose passion for Taekwondo defines her spirit of discipline and determination. A dedicated athlete and accomplished scholar, she balances the rigours of the IB curriculum with intensive training. With notable achievements, including a state-level achievement, she continues to strive for excellence, embodying resilience, perseverance, and the essence of a champion.
In an impromptu interview, she talks about who her greatest motivation has been, among other things.
What inspired you to take up Taekwondo?
The journey at the age of nine, when I was introduced to the opportunity to receive professional training near my home. Initially, I was hesitant, as stepping out of my comfort zone felt daunting. However, my parents encouraged me to embrace it as a chance to try something new. Gradually, my curiosity grew, and I developed a genuine interest in the sport.
Who has been your greatest source of motivation and support?
Many people have supported me throughout this journey, but my family and friends have been my greatest sources of motivation. My parents, in particular, helped me recognise Taekwondo as one of my passions and encouraged me to continually develop my skills. Moreover, my friends inspired me to push my limits and work harder. My teachers, who understand the importance of having to balance my academics and grades with sports, always encourage me to develop myself in both
What has been the most memorable competition you have participated in so far?
The most memorable competition I have participated in was my first regional-level championship, as it marked my first true experience of competing. It taught me how to handle pressure and overcome fear, and helped me realise that sports should not be played solely for medals, but for learning and personal growth. Also, one of my greatest achievements so far has been winning a bronze medal at the 8th Cadet and 41st Junior Delhi State Championship.
Share your daily training routine.
I train every alternate day to maintain consistency and refine my skills, focusing primarily on flexibility and endurance. I also dedicate time to practicing kicking techniques and poomsae, and occasionally incorporate strength training into my routine.

As an IB student, how do you balance academics and sports?
Balancing sports and academics, especially during assessments, can be challenging. However, I manage it through effective time management and clear prioritisation. Being an IB student has further strengthened these skills, enabling me to maintain harmony between my athletic and academic commitments.
Your favourite Taekwondo move.
The 540 kick, also known as the Tornado Kick, has been my favourite move since I first discovered it. Both challenging and rewarding, it is an exhilarating technique that I deeply admire. Although I have not yet perfected it, I continue to practice with dedication and determination.
