Rajalakshmi Pradhan, a Class 9 student of Apeejay School, Noida, is making her mark in the world of art with a special love for sculpture. In this conversation, she shares how her artistic journey began, what inspires her creations, and why working with clay brings her peace and joy. Read edited excerpts:
When and how did you first develop an interest in sculpture?
My original interest has always been in art, especially making portraits. But one of my teachers noticed my potential and encouraged me to try sculpture. At first, I wasn’t very confident, but with her guidance and motivation, I discovered that I truly enjoy shaping ideas into
three-dimensional forms. That’s how my journey with sculpture began.
What kind of sculptures do you enjoy creating the most?
I enjoy working with clay the most, especially natural clay, as it is very flexible and helps me bring out fine details.

Who or what inspires your artwork?
I draw a lot of inspiration from nature, especially flowers and their delicate patterns. Human expressions fascinate me too, because every face tells a different story and I like to create a new expression every time. Mythology is another big source of ideas. And above all, my teacher inspires me the most. She was the one who introduced me to sculpture and continues to encourage me, which keeps me motivated to grow as an artist.
Do you get opportunities to showcase your work in school exhibitions or competitions?
Yes, I’ve had many chances to present my work in school exhibitions, and it felt wonderful when people connected with my art. Competitions have also been motivating as they push me to refine my skills.
Could you describe the process you follow while making a sculpture?
The first step is to think of an idea, whether it’s something from nature, a person, or even an abstract feeling. Then, I like to sketch the layout once before beginning with the clay work. The second step is choosing the material. I usually choose air-dry clay for school work and competitions, and natural clay for my own practice. Then, I make the basic shapes and forms. After that, I slowly start adding details, textures and minute designs to it. Once it’s finished, I either paint it or leave it as it is, depending on the effect I want.
Do you see sculpture as just a hobby, or do you want to pursue it as a career in the future?
Right now, it’s more of a hobby for me. But in the future, I would really like to discover and pursue it more seriously. Art as a whole and sculpture in particular is something I want to always keep as an important part of my life.
How does sculpture make you feel?
Sculpture makes me feel calm, content and at peace. I often lose track of time while creating. And at the end, it gives me a really proud sense of achievement when I see the final piece.
