A clarion call to #BeatPlasticPollution     

Apeejay Stya University (ASU), Gurugram observed World Environment Day 2025 in line with the global theme #BeatPlasticPollution. The event was organised to promote sustainable environmental practices, raise awareness on plastic pollution, and foster community engagement in ecological preservation. The event was marked by active participation from the university leadership, esteemed faculty, staff, students, and representatives of Larsen & Toubro (L&T)—ASU’s proud partner in the initiative.

Key personnel from L&T present for the celebration were Mr. Jagdeep Singh, In-Charge, Environment, Safety and Health, Mr. PLN Harish Kumar, In-Charge, QA/QC, and Mr. Peeyush Kumar, In-Charge, Industrial Relations and Administration. Additionally, distinguished members of the Apeejay fraternity including Dr. Pardeep Kumar, Registrar, Prof. Moinuddin, Prof. Vimla Veeraraghavan, Prof. Sanjay Ahirwal, Prof. Anupama Diwan, Prof. Ananda Padhan, Prof. Amit Sinha graced the occasion.

The celebration was marked by a plantation drive led by the Hon’ble Vice Chancellor Prof. (Dr.) Vijay Vir Singh that took place in the park near the main administrative block. Fruit-bearing saplings were planted, generously provided by L&T. The digging of pits and logistical support was also facilitated by the L&T team, showcasing a successful industry-institution partnership for sustainability.

Environmental Pledge

A specially designed pledge was administered by Prof. (Dr.) Vijay Vir Singh, drawing from India’s rich cultural wisdom and commitment to sustainable living. The pledge encouraged all participants to:

Reject single-use plastic

Embrace the principles of reduce, reuse, and recycle

Act responsibly in homes, campuses, and public spaces

Uphold ecological justice inspired by Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam (the world is one family)

Work in the spirit of Seva (Service) and Sankalp (Resolution) for a greener planet

In the end, all participants gathered for a group photograph following the plantation and pledge session. The event was documented for university archives and shared as part of the university’s environmental action highlights.

The event was coordinated by Dr. Vijay Kumar, along with Dr. Sangeeta Taneja and Dr. Rani Mansuri. Their meticulous planning and efficient execution ensured the event’s success. Sharing his thoughts Dr Vijay Kumar emphasised, “If we want to save our future, we need to work mindfully today. We should avoid every activity which harms the environment and adopt everything which protects and preserves it.”  

A special thanks was extended to Larsen & Toubro team for their valuable contribution, especially in providing saplings, technical support, and manpower for the plantation drive. Their continued collaboration with Apeejay Stya University reinforces the institution’s dedication to sustainable development and corporate environmental responsibility.

The World Environment Day 2025 celebration at Apeejay Stya University was not only a ceremonial occasion but also a reaffirmation of the university’s commitment to environmental consciousness. It brought together academia, industry, and students under the shared vision of a plastic-free, greener planet. The university looks forward to continuing such impactful engagements and strengthening its leadership in environmental advocacy and action.
