Annu Gulia is an accomplished Research Assistant at AIIMS Delhi. Her journey is one of self-discovery and determination. A graduate of MSc Clinical Research from Apeejay Stya University (Batch 2022), she shares how her time at the university shaped her career and led her to the world of medical research. In this insightful conversation, she talks about her academic experiences, career path, and the importance of clinical research in healthcare. Read edited excerpts:
What inspired you to pursue a career in medical research?
I was always inclined towards science, especially medical research. From a young age, I was curious about problem-solving – if something wasn’t working, I wanted to figure out why. Unlike becoming a doctor, where you treat patients directly, research allows me to contribute to evidence-based medicine. It bridges the gap between scientific discoveries and real-world applications, ensuring better treatment options for patients.

How did Apeejay Stya University contribute to your career growth?
Studying clinical research at Apeejay was an enriching experience. The curriculum provided a strong foundation in research methodology, data analysis, and regulatory aspects. The faculty was incredibly supportive – they guided me in practical skills essential for the real world, from conducting quality research to identifying the best internship opportunities. For instance, they helped me explore training at Tata Memorial Institute in Mumbai and Jamia Millia Islamia, where I eventually did my cancer research internship.
Can you share your journey from graduation to securing a position at AIIMS Delhi?
After completing my master’s, I was actively looking for job opportunities. One day, I came across a research assistant vacancy at AIIMS Delhi on LinkedIn. I applied, got shortlisted, and after an interview, I was selected. Initially, I was working on meta-analysis and narrative reviews in clinical research. Later, I transitioned to wet lab work in pediatric surgery, where I research VDB gene polymorphism in vitamin D metabolism and its impact on urinary tract infections in children with kidney disease.
What advice would you give to students aspiring to enter research?
If you want to pursue a career in research, you must read extensively, stay updated with ongoing studies and research articles. Many people aim for innovation, but if research on your idea has already been done, then what’s the point? Keep yourself informed, apply for internships, and don’t hesitate to explore opportunities. Platforms like AIIMS recruitment portals post multiple vacancies daily. Apply, send your CVs, and attend walk-in interviews.
What do you enjoy outside of work?
I love exploring cafes, reading novels, and watching Netflix. On long weekends, I prefer adventurous activities, like hiking in Rishikesh. Solo trips are my therapy – I enjoy spending time alone and discovering new places.
Your message for students
Do what you love, but never stop learning. Whether it’s research, medicine, or any other field, stay curious and keep reading. Knowledge is key to making a real impact in any profession.
