It’s that time of year! The Festival of Lights is around the corner. And as families gather to honour traditions and share happiness, home decoration becomes a key aspect of the festivities.

Decorating your home for the festival can elevate the overall atmosphere, creating a vibrant, welcoming space that embodies the spirit of the occasion. In fact, the decoration can be simple, cost-effective, and beautiful, using items you already have at home.

Start by gathering diyas, candles, or tea lights to create a warm, traditional ambiance. Group them around entryways or near windows for a soft glow. You can also float candles in bowls of water along with fresh flower petals or leaves from your garden. Adding a few drops of essential oils like lavender or sandalwood to the water brings a calming fragrance to your home.

Next, consider a rangoli design at your doorstep. You don’t need store-bought powders—ingredients like rice flour, turmeric, dried pulses, or ground spices work wonderfully and offer a natural look. Use vibrant combinations to make a welcoming pattern. Alternatively, you can create floral rangolis with leaves, flower petals, or cutouts from leftover fabric and paper. Paper can be fashioned into flower shapes and arranged in a circular design for a unique twist on the traditional rangoli.

If you have glass jars or mason jars, turn them into festive lanterns. Wrap these jars with lace, yarn, or even thin strips of old fabric, then place a candle inside. The light creates captivating shadows, adding to the Diwali ambiance. Fairy lights are another versatile option. Hang them along stair railings, drape them over mirrors, or use them in glass containers to create cozy nooks. If you have old sarees, scarves, or colorful dupattas, use them as decorative table runners or cushion covers to add a rich, festive feel to your space.

Garden flowers, especially marigolds, can be added as garlands or in small clusters for natural pops of color around your home. Arrange them on tables, doors, or around frames for an added traditional touch. You can also incorporate family photos or meaningful trinkets into your decor. String them together to make a gallery wall or place them on your rangoli to add a personal dimension to your Diwali decorations.

With creativity and simple household items, your home can be transformed into a warm, festive space for Diwali without extra spending. Embrace these
do-it-yourself ideas and enjoy the process of creating a joyful, personalised atmosphere for your celebrations. Happy Diwali!
