Recently, Apeejay School, Panchsheel Park, organised an interactive session entitled Conscious Parenting: Raising Empowered Children. It was aimed at educating parents about contemporary ways of parenting that are grounded in mindfulness and emotional intelligence, amongst other aspects, and foster strong parent-child relationships. Ms Rachna Jain, pre-Primary In-charge at Apeejay School, led the session to enlighten parents on how to promote a caring and supportive environment for their children.

The session started with a briefing on what conscious parenting is. She said it is beyond the management of children’s behaviours; rather, it is all about being present, aware, and mindful in every interaction that one has with children. Conscious parenting encourages parents to establish deep emotional connections with their children, where feelings and needs are concerned, to bring them up as independent and confident individuals. It is based on the assumption that children flower better when they are understood and appreciated.

Key Topics Discussed

Ms Jain talked about the importance of brain development in the early years since these formative years create the foundation for a child’s future. She explained that setting routines and boundaries is crucial because they make children feel secure and understand what is expected of them.

Another important message was on the role of modelling. Ms. Jain kept reminding the parents that much more is learned by children through observation rather than by instruction. Positive behaviours, control over emotions, and good habits need to be demonstrated to the child as part of conscious parenting.

She also spoke about emotional intelligence and how parents should teach their children to perceive and understand their feelings and deal with them further on. The earlier the age at which one is taught emotional intelligence, the more equipped the child will be in dealing with social situations and forming good relationships.

She explained that too much exposure to the screen is detrimental because it will affect the child’s cognitive and social development. She instead proposed various other interactive and physical activities for children that would trigger their imagination and reasoning skills.

Principal’s Address

The session was graced with an address by the Principal, Ms. Surabhi Joshi. She spoke in terms of the importance of instilling discipline, values, and language during the formative years. In other words, she pointed out that such foundational ingredients are highly crucial for all-round development and will help the children prepare for future challenges.

The session was wrapped up with a very interactive Q&A session where parents were engaged with Ms Jain on various parenting issues. Parents valued the concrete strategies given and shared their desire to incorporate these conscious parenting skills into daily living.

In a nutshell, the session on Conscious Parenting: Raising Empowered Children at Apeejay School, Panchsheel Park was inspirational and informative and went hand in glove to help parents provide wholesome assistance in the growth and development of their children.
