Anand Singh, Apeejay Charkhi Dadri alumnus and a software developer at Amazon believes that it’s passion and happiness that helps one go a long way in her/his career journey
Anand Singh is a Software Developer Engineer at Amazon. An alumnus of Apeejay Charkhi Dadri, Anand was first introduced to the world of coding when he was in class 10. And since then, there was no looking back. Before joining Amazon, Anand has also worked with Paytm as a Senior Software Engineer. In an exclusive interview, the coding expert discusses how this journey into the world of software and codes started with a website development competition at his school. Edited excerpts:
What does a day at the office look like?
The day starts with checking mails. Amazon has business all over the globe, so we also get many emails overnight. I begin the day by checking the inbox. Then, I discuss the day’s plan with the team. We divide the daily tasks amongst us and the target is to complete them within the deadline. Of course, I handle the coding part as well.
What was the inspiration to become a software developer?
The first time I came across coding was in class 10 at school. We were introduced to basic HTML. We were told that all class 10 students will have to develop a website and the best one will be awarded. I realised back then that the code I will write must be something new and will also be appreciated by all. So, that was when I decided to be a software developer. Otherwise, I had plans to be a lawyer (laughs).
Please share some of your best memories from your school days?
I would say the best part about my school life were my friends. The friends I made there were special. Even now they remember me and so do I. All of them are doing very well in their lives. All the students who passed out from Apeejay Charkhi Dadri have achieved something in their life as the years went by.
What life lessons would you like to give to a current student at Apeejay Charkhi Dadri?
Whatever you do, always think if you enjoy it or not; whether you like it or not. During my college days, in the computer science course, there were a lot of students but most of them were there because computer science was a popular branch of study that offered good placement. They were not there out of a passion for coding. See, initially you will get a job in any field but as you continue, over the years, you begin to realise that you don’t enjoy it. Sometimes, you won’t feel like going to work and feel extremely unmotivated. I always say it is never too late so, whenever you decide, it should be something you enjoy. That would help you to continue in it for a long time.
My education began from there. Classes 11 and 12 are one of the most important phases in your education journey. We carry the education we receive in that phase to college and later apply that knowledge in our work. So, my foundation stone was laid at Apeejay Charkhi Dadri. My school is crucial to my journey.
What are your future targets?
Well, I am enjoying coding at the moment and I would like to continue with this. I haven’t thought about anything else. I am happy here.
