In a fast-paced digital age, where words often fall short, these little characters have become our emotional ambassadors, turning mundane conversations into vivid exchanges. On this World Emoji Day 2024, let’s take a moment to celebrate the vibrant universe of tiny symbols that have transformed the way we communicate!
Imagine a world where every smile, sigh, and fleeting thought is captured in a colorful glyph — a world where feelings are distilled into playful icons? Sounds surreal, isn’t it? These emoticons speak a universal language, transcending borders and generations, helping us express the inexpressible.
Why is the day celebrated?
Let’s break that down. Believe it or not but the day has not been selected arbitrarily. So, what, in particular, is that day supposed to mean? It’s because, on that very day in 2002, Apple presented its calendar program for Macs, iCal, at the MacWorld exhibition. World Emoji Day is celebrated annually on July 17. This day was initiated because the calendar emoji displays the particular date. It’s a fun and lighthearted occasion dedicated to honouring the small digital icons that enrich our communication. Emojis allow us to express emotions and ideas, adding color and universality to our messages across languages and cultures.

What does “emoji” mean?
The Royal Spanish Academy (RAE) defines it as “a small digital image or icon that is used in electronic messages to indicate emotions, objects, ideas, and many other concepts”. The term “emoji” originated in Japan, from combining “e” meaning drawing with “moji”, meaning character or letter.
