In school, students often focus on marks, subjects, and examinations. Yet the habits that shape a meaningful career are often less visible. Curiosity, the courage to question what seems wrong, and the discipline of reading widely can leave a far deeper impact than academic scores alone.
For G Radhika, an alumna of Apeejay School Noida and now a Fincrime and Anti-money Laundering professional at Mashreq Bank in the UAE, these habits continue to guide her work. Financial crime analysis requires close attention to patterns, systems, and the movement of money across sectors and countries.
“A Commerce background certainly helps. Reading economics, understanding macroeconomics, doing accountancy well, and studying business all give you useful perspective. They help you understand how numbers move, how fraud can be hidden, and how trade works across countries and sectors.”
At the same time, she shared that the field is open to students from many academic backgrounds, provided they develop the right mindset early. “During school, I think students should build ethics, morality, and the courage to question what seems wrong. Just because something is happening does not mean it is right. You should have the confidence to stand up, ask why, and point out what seems questionable.”
Looking back, the alumna opined that school offers a rare opportunity to explore ideas and build intellectual curiosity before professional life becomes more specialised. “I would say be curious. Ask tough questions, but ask them with the intention of knowing, not simply proving someone wrong. The opportunities you get in school are unmatched. You will not get this phase of life again.”
She also highlighted the importance of reading and cultural exposure in shaping thoughtful individuals. “I would say develop the habit of reading. Learn to appreciate good music, good films, and thoughtful discussion. Ask the right questions. Those things lead not only to a fulfilling life, but also to a fulfilling career.”
For students, these habits often begin quietly during school years. Over time, they shape the way individuals think, learn, and respond to the world around them.
