At Apeejay School, Sector 15, Faridabad, learning doesn’t stop at books and blackboards. The recent activity, titled Sailing with the Weather: Row Your Boat, was a perfect example of how young children can explore complex ideas through simple, interactive play. This hands-on session was designed especially for Pre-primary students, introducing them to the concept of how weather influences boat travel.
The idea was simple but smart — turn abstract weather concepts into sensory experiences. Instead of just telling children that wind can push a boat or rain can make sailing tough, the activity helped them feel it.

Children participated in simulations that recreated different weather conditions. With the help of fans, sprays of water, and textured materials, students experienced what it might feel like to row a boat in the wind, during rain, or on a sunny day. These sensory experiences brought excitement and curiosity into the classroom.
The row-your-boat activity wasn’t just about play — it was structured to teach. Students weren’t just building boats out of paper or pretending to sail. This kind of learning builds a foundation not just for vocabulary, but also for observation and problem-solving skills.
The activity also encouraged teamwork and communication. Children worked in small groups, sharing materials and ideas. Teachers guided them through prompts and storytelling to deepen their understanding.

Ms Gunjan Sharma, Pre-primary In-charge at the school, said,
“On a rainy day, our students had a blast with this activity! They learnt the art of origami by making paper boats and then enjoyed sailing them in water while singing the classic song Row, Row, Row Your Boat. It was a fun, hands-on experience that brought learning to life. Students developed their fine motor skills through origami. They understood the concept of buoyancy and sailing. This activity encouraged creativity and imagination in them.”
The activity, Sailing with the Weather: Row Your Boat, was more than just another classroom activity. It was an example of how schools can bring learning to life when they meet children at their level, with simplicity, creativity, and care.
