Little hands, big lessons

As part of its Integrated Learning Programme, Apeejay School, Saket organised an engaging and hands-on Community Helper Puppet Activity for Kindergarten students, helping young learners understand the invaluable contribution of a gardener to the environment. The thoughtfully designed activity blended creativity with experiential learning, making the concept of community helpers both meaningful and enjoyable for the children.

The session focused on introducing students to the important role gardeners play in nurturing plants, maintaining gardens, and keeping the surroundings clean, green, and beautiful. To reinforce this learning, each child was given a gardener cut-out, which they carefully coloured using bright shades before pasting it onto an ice cream stick to create an attractive puppet. The simple craft activity transformed into an interactive learning experience as students proudly displayed their puppets and spoke about the responsibilities of a gardener.

The activity encouraged children to appreciate the hard work and dedication of community helpers who contribute to a healthy and sustainable environment. Through guided discussions and classroom interactions, students learnt how gardeners care for plants, water them regularly, trim hedges, and help create pleasant green spaces that everyone can enjoy. The bilingual approach, incorporating both English and Hindi vocabulary, further strengthened language development and helped children confidently identify and describe the gardener’s role in both languages.

Beyond conceptual understanding, the activity also supported the holistic development of the young learners. Colouring, cutting, pasting, and assembling the puppet enhanced their fine motor skills, hand-eye coordination, concentration, and creativity. The interactive nature of the session encouraged active participation, imagination, and self-expression while making learning joyful and memorable.
