Tips for a safe digital experience

With the advent of the internet, the reach of police and law enforcement agencies to catch criminals has increased, but so has the sophistication of criminals. Internet scams, where criminals utilise online platforms to steal money or personal information, have been on the rise as more people embrace the internet.

Money scams are the most common type, transcending the digital realm, with roots dating back to the dawn of civilisation. In the past, these scams often involved physical theft of gold, silver, or currency. However, as technology progressed, and new forms of money like bank cards, credit cards, and online wallets emerged, scammers found it challenging to snatch money directly due to enhanced security measures. Nevertheless, the second method, cheating individuals into voluntarily giving or transferring money, remains prevalent and likely to persist indefinitely.

Senior citizens, less tech-savvy and sometimes living alone, are particularly vulnerable to scams.
The absence of immediate tech assistance makes them easy targets for scammers who exploit their lack of familiarity with technology.

While it may seem that scammers are too powerful to combat, there are practical steps to stay safe:

  1. Never share sensitive information: Avoid sharing PINs, OTPs, CVVs, or any other bank details over the phone or through emails. Legitimate transactions will prompt you to enter personal or bank details on the official website, not over the phone.
  2. Trust your instincts: If a transaction or deal feels untrustworthy, it likely is.
  3. Beware of unrealistic offers: If an offer seems too good to be true, it probably is. Be cautious of fake websites promising massive discounts on products.
  4. Purchase from reputable sources: When buying expensive gadgets, opt for reputed websites or physical stores. Trusted platforms like Amazon, Flipkart, Vijay Sales, or Croma offer certified products, minimising the risk of scams.
  5. Assist elderly individuals: Help elderly individuals with tech-related problems. Patience and assistance can go a long way in preventing them from falling victim to scams.

In conclusion, while scammers may appear clever, exercising caution and remaining vigilant can help us easily avoid falling prey to their schemes.
