‘This school can’t go wrong when it comes to academics; here they are unbeatable’

There are so many things that parents look for while choosing a school for their child; be it admission to the nursery or any other class. The meticulous manner in which parents go about the entire exercise is worth applauding. Some parents even start preparing and looking for the best possible school for their ward the minute the baby turns one.

After all, who doesn’t want their child to study in the best school that ticks off most of the boxes – proximity to home, academics, and extracurricular activities – are top priorities for all parents, and Dr Awnish Kumar, a Radiologist in the capital is no different.

“As doctors, my wife, Dr Anupma, is a gynaecologist, we are away from home for long hours. We would love to spend time with our daughter, Arhana Singh who is in the nursery at Apeejay School, Pitampura, but it is not always possible. We were looking for a school that had good teachers with a strong academic focus. We heard only good things about this school and zeroed in on it,” Dr Kumar said.

Excerpts from an interview.

What were some of the things that you looked at while choosing a school for your daughter?

I have another daughter, Araina, who is in class I studying at Apeejay. And both times the choice was this school only. We didn’t even look at any other school though we had filled in forms in other schools as well. But the minute Apeejay was confirmed our search was over.

What are some of the changes that you have seen in your daughters?

It is too early to comment on the progress of my younger one; she has just started school this year, but there have been plenty of changes in Araina. She has shown tremendous improvement; she has become vocal and eloquent. Academically too, she has shown improvement. Her vocabulary has improved; she is good at English and other subjects as well. Given the fact that we can’t give her the time she deserves, she is doing very well in school.

How does it help parents like yourself to have good teachers in the school?

Every school should have good teachers irrespective of the amount of time that parents can give at home. This is the most important aspect of any school. But for my wife and me, the fact that Apeejay has great teachers is a boon for us. The teachers take care of both my daughters as far as academics and personal development are concerned.

Teachers must build a rapport with each student and while this may appear to be a tough task, it is important so that the child can progress. Individual attention makes all the difference. We get regular updates from them on our kids’ progress.

Dr Awnish Kumar, Radiologist & Father of students at Apeejay School, Pitampura

What was your impression of the school?

I shifted to Rohini from Ghaziabad only recently. Most of the doctors’ children at the hospital have been enrolled in Apeejay School, Pitampura. I had not even heard the name of the school before I shifted here. But I heard only good reports from my colleague doctors and went with the flow.

Are you happy with the teaching methodology?

I am extremely satisfied. As I mentioned before, I am not so sure about my younger daughter’s progress since she is very young at present but my elder one is doing very well in her studies. Though I feel that the school can pay more attention to extracurricular activities, they can’t go wrong when it comes to academics; here they are unbeatable.

Why do parents now insist on the holistic development of their children?

When I was in school, the only topic of conversation was how the child was doing in their studies. Today, our social setup has changed. We see kids excelling at co-curricular activities too. Even toddlers are making a splash. Parents want that their child shines as well in all spheres, hence the need for overall development for the child.

What are some of the lessons that a child must learn?

The most important lesson for a child to learn is discipline. A person who lives an orderly life will not have any problems following rules. We live in society and living by the rules is necessary.
