Parents in India spend significant amount of time choosing the perfect school for their children. This is because education is highly valued and parents believe that good education is crucial for their children’s future success. They recognise that the school plays a vital role in shaping their child’s academic, personal, and professional development. Parents also want to secure the best possible education for their children to ensure they have a competitive edge in academic pursuits.
Therefore, it is not surprising that parents’ like Shubhashree and her husband Dr Sibasish Dey spent a lot of time when it was time for their son, Shivaanshu’s turn to start formal education.
In a candid interview the mother, who works in the IT sector talks how and why she chose Apeejay School, Saket for her son, who is now in class I.
How did you choose this school?
I live in and around Saket and whenever I observed children from other schools, students from Apeejay stood out. Apeejayites always conduct themselves well and respect everyone. This inspired me to go and check out the school. I also visited the website and what I saw really impressed me. There was no doubt in my mind that my son would study at Apeejay.
How was the admission process?
My son joined the school in the nursery. Back then due to COVID-19, forms and everything was done online. But I still needed clarity. When I went to the school, the staff was extremely cordial and explained the entire process to me. They appraised me about the forms and the documents that would be required. In the end, I applied online as well as submitted the hard copies.
My son is doing well in his class. His report card is excellent. So, I am happy. The best part is that the teachers pace out the learning in a manner that makes it possible for all the kids to understand and gain knowledge. Because of this, he can read and write sentences

Did you have a checklist while looking for the perfect school?
As I mentioned, I live in Saket area and it has three-four very good schools. But the way we, my husband and I, have been brought up is very different from how kids are brought up today. Take an example. Apeejay School, Saket discourages parents from celebrating their kids’ birthdays in an extravagant manner. This is because there are children from all strata of the society and not everyone can afford to splurge. This really impressed me. We wanted to give our child an education that would keep him grounded and teach him our tradition and culture. Apeejay is a perfect fit.
How has your experience been so far?
It is a highly recommended school. I have been recommending this school to other parents as well. It has a brand value and great teachers. Also, kids at this age can get overwhelmed when they start going to school. The atmosphere here is so good that the toddlers feel at ease immediately. This is an excellent strategy that the school has adopted.
How has your son’s learning been so far?
He is doing well in his class. His report card is excellent. So, I am happy. The best part is that the teachers pace out the learning in a manner that makes it possible for all the kids to understand and gain knowledge. Because of this, he can read and write sentences. He knows and understands two languages – Hindi and English. And then there is our Bengali. This is commendable for a child who is only six years old.
How have the teachers been in nursery, KG and now class I?
They have been pretty understanding. My father passed away recently. So, my son had to take a break for 10 days. But the teachers were extremely cooperative. They send the curriculum for the days that he missed so that he could make up for it at home. Second, once my son fell ill in the school. The best part was that they immediately called me and waited for me to pick up Shivaanshu from the school; it was not as if they handed over the child to someone else. This really impressed me. Safety is a big concern for parents these days. The school took care of that.
What about the parent teacher meetings?
There is a cycle for parent-teacher meetings. They are held thrice in a year – every quarter. The best part is that they give a time slot for the parents according to the child’s roll number. During these meetings, the teachers are very particular about giving an overall positive feedback – on the learning curve and other personality aspects.
You are working. How do you spend quality time with your son?
I’ve been quite lucky because my mother is there. While I drop him to school, she is the one who picks him up. Also, the good part is that the homework that they give is mostly craft related that Shivaanshu is able to do on his own. When I am back home, I spend the next three-four hours with him. We read and do other fun activities together.
