There are many students who are not very happy that they have to choose another language to study when they come in class VI. But they seldom realise the value this second language – beside Hindi and English – can add to their career prospects in the future.

Learning a second language is a journey that involves patience, perseverance, and dedication. It challenges students to step-out of their comfort zones and develop new skills. It fosters self-confidence, adaptability, and a sense of achievement when they can effectively communicate in another language. It can expand personal networks and facilitate meaningful connections with people from different linguistic backgrounds.

According to Nirmala Devi, French Facilitator at Apeejay School International , Panchsheel Park learning a second language besides Hindi and English can help students broaden their horizons.

“When students learn a new language, it opens doors to global understanding for students. For example, let us take French. The language is spoken formally in 29 countries as the national or official language. It is the only language other than English spoken in five continents. When you travel abroad, knowing a language – it could be any – can help a person communicate better,” Nirmala explained.

“Knowledge of a language other than your native language can give students a peek into the rich heritage and culture that the country has. Languages help you connect with other cultures, beliefs, and traditions. “This, in turn, gives you a positive outlook in life”

It opens doors to more job opportunities. “Knowing a second language can help better a person’s job prospects. India is home to several MNCs. A person may have an edge over the others if he/she knows an additional language,” Nirmala said.

She added that each year, many students apply to foreign universities to study there. Prior knowledge of the country’s language is an added advantage. Knowledge of a language other than your native language can give students a peek into the rich heritage and culture that the country has.

“You understand the norms better and become tolerant and open to diverse opinions of others,” Nirmala opined and added that languages help you connect with other cultures, beliefs, and traditions. “This, in turn, gives you a positive outlook in life,” she said.

And the best way to learn a language is to take baby steps. “Join a class, start listening to their music, news, and even watch movies. It will help the student grasp the language faster in a better manner. Talk to people who speak that language to get the pronunciation correct,” Nirmala said.
