On October 5, 2024, Apeejay School International (ASI), Panchsheel Park, organised its Student-Led Conference (SLC) with the theme ‘Nurturing Curious Minds’, an amalgamation of learning through multiple subjects uniquely.

From the youngest learners in the Reception to the more advanced students in PYP-5, the event reflected the school’s commitment to nurturing student agency, confidence, and reflective thinking. It also provided parents with a meaningful glimpse into their child’s progress, fostering a deeper connection between home and school.

The event embodied the school’s commitment to fostering self-reflection, critical thinking, and ownership of the learning process in students. The SLC was designed to empower students by giving them the platform to present their learning journeys to their parents. The event highlighted the children’s growth, creativity, and enthusiasm and reinforced a strong partnership between school and home.

According to Ms Neha Sharma, Vice-principal, ASI, “The PYP Student-Led Conference is a great platform which empowers young learners to reflect, communicate, and think critically, aligning with our mission to nurture compassionate, innovative leaders prepared for success in a global world.”

What is SLC?

It’s a forum that inspires students to take charge of what they learn. Here, the students share their work and accomplishments with their parents, how they have progressed and what their aspirations are. This approach fosters a sense of self-assessment, communication skills, and the capacity for self-directed learning. The event also strengthened the bond between parents, teachers, and students, making the process of education more collaborative and transparent.

Reception: A Voyage of Emotions and Creativity

Emotional recognition and phonetic awareness dominated the students. They expressed emotions confidently, had phonics knowledge, and performed hands-on counting. They even displayed their hygiene through show-and-tell regarding health and cleanliness. The parents were delighted to see their children’s creative artwork and growth in communication.

Building Confidence in Young Learners

The learners presented their achievements as part of the Primary Years Programme (PYP). The event emphasised simple tasks that encouraged students to reflect on their progress. To ensure every learner felt comfortable, differentiation strategies were used: Confident learners led discussions independently, while shy students received support through visual aids and peer practice. Parents appreciated this thoughtful approach.

PYP 2: Exploring the Human Body through Inquiry

PYP-2 students aligned their SLC presentations with their ongoing Unit of Inquiry on Body Systems. As part of the theme ‘Who We Are’, students discussed the human body’s intricate systems and shared insights they had gathered through classroom activities. They also showcased their skills in Mathematics, English, Science, Hindi, French, and Spanish, engaging parents through fun activities and interactive games.

PYP 3: Discovering Machines and Civilizations

For PYP-3 students, the SLC was an exciting opportunity to display their understanding of simple and compound machines and ancient civilisations like the Indus Valley, Egyptian, and Mesopotamian cultures. The event highlighted how students had developed essential research, communication, and thinking skills through the PYP framework. The session was fun and educational, reflecting the school’s commitment to transdisciplinary learning.

PYP 4: Energy Transformation and Sustainable Practices

The theme of energy transformation took centrestage for PYP-4 learners. Students showcased hands-on experiments to demonstrate key concepts like the law of energy conservation and sustainable energy practices. Linking their learning to Sustainable Development Goal 7, they advocated for using renewable energy, demonstrating their growing awareness of real-world issues.

The presentations also highlighted students’ linguistic growth. With their understanding of science and culture, the students made a lasting impression on the audience.

PYP 5: A Collaborative Learning Experience

The SLC for PYP-5 students was a celebration of collaborative learning. Students reinforced their understanding of key concepts and essential skills like teamwork, communication, and creativity through group performances and interactive activities.

Parents enjoyed watching their children engage with their peers, reflecting the spirit of cooperation that is central to the PYP framework. The event served as a powerful reminder of how learning is a shared journey between students, teachers, and parents.

The SLC ended with a collaborative presentation by the PYP-5 students, who showcased their learning across subjects like Math, Science, and the Arts. Through engaging performances and activities, students exhibited their teamwork, communication skills and capacity to work with peers effectively.

Taking cognizance from all grades, children confidently presented their progress, insights, and discoveries and reaffirmed the spirit of the school in pursuit of being reflective, confident, and creative thinkers while underlining the significance of collaboration between students, teachers, and families involved in the learning journey.

The success of the SLC at ASI is one example where the natural curiosity of all the learners, as an inherent strength of the IB PYP, with the vibrancy of this culture, brings value and pride at every step of their learning.
