With the widespread use of technology backed by the internet, cyber security has become a pressing concern for individuals, businesses, and institutions alike. From phishing scams to identity theft, cyber criminals continue to find new ways to exploit individuals as well as organisations. In this context, it is important for educational institutions to take proactive measures to protect their students from these threats.

Keeping that in mind, Apeejay School, Noida has taken a step forward by hosting an interactive workshop on cyber awareness for students of classes 9 and 11. Conducted as part of the Cyber Awareness Year 2023, the workshop was held by Cyber Guardians, a consulting group of 37 students of class 12, who also offer timely guidance and assistance on cyber security issues.

The workshop featured two expert speakers, Mr. Subimal Bhattacharjee, a policy advisor on cyber and technology issues, and Mr. R.K. Singh, an expert in mission and satcom systems and a stakeholder in the school.

During the workshop, Mr. Bhattacharjee advised students on social hygiene and emphasised the importance of implementing strong passwords to personal accounts. He also provided information on how to report cybercrimes online at the government portal, cybercrime.gov.in, or via the 24×7 helpline number 1930.

At the same time, Mr. Singh warned the students against getting carried away by online gaming platforms, which can be used as a phishing medium to trap youngsters into giving personal information. He also spoke about his involvement in the Human Space Flight Centre program of ISRO.

Further, the students had the opportunity to ask questions, which were addressed by both the speakers.

As part of this drive, the Cyber Guardians designed various challenges for students of classes 1 to 12 to spread awareness on the cyber world. This workshop was a timely initiative by the school to equip its students with the necessary skills and knowledge to stay safe in the digital world.

The event concluded with a Vote of Thanks extended by Aryaman Rahul Srivastava and Atharv Gupta, representatives of Cyber Guardians.

While sharing his thoughts on the informative workshop, Atharv Singhal stated, “It was a very informative workshop with Bhattacharjee sir, who highlighted some of the key points that we need to take care of while browsing the internet.” He also appreciated Mr Bhattacharjee’s willingness to answer students’ questions, which made them feel engaged and valued.

According to Aryaman Rahul Srivastava, the cyber awareness workshop was very informative. He emphasised the importance of cyber hygiene that Bhattacharjee stressed during the session. He said, “It is crucial for all of us to maintain safe online practices as we increasingly become digital citizens.”
