On the occasion of Diwali, Apeejay School, Model Town, Jalandhar, planned a visit to Gandhi Vanita Ashram, a government-led children’s home for girls upon receiving an invitation from the latter. To celebrate the festival, 15 girls from Apeejay went to meet the less privileged girls at the Ashram, interacted with them, and join them in various creative activities.

It was wonderful to see the girls at Gandhi Vanita Ashram create beautiful pieces of art. With the help of the Apeejayites, they made stunning posters and rangolis. Many of them created mehendi art.

The Ashram’s superintendent Harwinder Kaur and Child Protection Officer Amneet Kaur expressed satisfaction with the compassionate approach of the Apeejay students.

Talking about the experience, a Class VII student Sumedha said, “The visit was truly inspiring. We got to know about the girls’ struggles and how they overcame the challenges. I realised life is not just about happiness. There can be difficulties and sufferings, but we need to maintain a positive mindset to sail through it all.”

“From our interaction with the girls at the Ashram, we learnt to appreciate the little things in life. I feel extremely fortunate to be living comfortably with my parents. I would love to see more people donating toys, stationery, and money to these children,” Priyanshi expressed.

Elaborating further on the lessons learned from the visit, another Class VII student Simarbir Kaur added, “Not everyone is as fortunate as you are. Not everyone is privileged. Don’t take what you have for granted; appreciate all that you have. I am thankful to the school administration for such a soul-enriching experience.”

“Such interactions enable students to become socially responsible and empathise with the plight of the less privileged.”
