In an era where digital technology intertwines seamlessly in our day-to-day lives, the potential for young people to influence global change has never been greater. International Youth Day is observed on August 12, annually. The theme of this year’s International Youth Day is: Youth Digital Pathways for Sustainable Development.

As the world faces mounting environmental, social, and economic challenges, the innovative spirit and technological acumen of the younger generation offer a beacon of hope for a sustainable future.

Based on the theme of this year’s International Youth Day 2024, let’s unleash the ways how students can easily contribute to society for better sustainability!

Knowledge Sharing

Education is a lifelong process. It is something that plays an imperative role, especially in terms of driving sustainable development. Youth of today play a crucial role in both disseminating and acquiring knowledge. Young educators and learners are creating and participating in online courses, webinars, and discussion forums focused on sustainability. Such initiatives, when integrated into educational curricula, inspire students to engage with global issues. Peer-to-peer learning platforms enable young people to share best practices, innovative ideas, and research, fostering a culture of sustainability from a young age.

Sustainable Lifestyle Choices

Youth are increasingly adopting and promoting sustainable lifestyle choices that reduce their ecological footprint. From embracing plant-based diets to advocating for minimalistic living, young people are redefining consumption patterns. Such adaptation may contribute for a better living. Other activities such as \the zero-waste movement, led by young influencers, encourage reducing waste through mindful consumption, recycling, and upcycling. By choosing sustainable fashion, using eco-friendly products, and supporting local, ethical brands, youth are driving demand for more sustainable products and practices.

‘Students today are at the forefront of a technological revolution that offers multiple opportunities to address global challenges and drive sustainability. This opportunity is unique because it combines youthful creativity with cutting-edge technology, enabling students to innovate in ways that were once unimaginable. Whether through the development of eco-friendly technologies, the use of data to solve environmental problems, or the creation of awareness through social media, students have a powerful role to play in shaping a sustainable future’ quoted Sumit Pandey, a student of Apeejay Stya University.

Global Collaboration and Networking

The interconnected nature of today’s world allows youth to collaborate on not just a limited scale but also expand their horizons globally by sharing ideas and resources to tackle sustainability challenges. Various organisations intend to bring young people together from diverse backgrounds to work on sustainability projects. These collaborations enable the exchange of knowledge, the development of cross-cultural solutions, and the amplification of individual efforts. By participating in global conferences and forums, young people can influence international policies and contribute to global sustainability goals.

The role of youth in contributing to sustainability is both vital and dynamic. Their innovative spirit, digital prowess, and commitment to a sustainable future make them powerful agents of change. So on this International Youth Day, focus on not just living a sustainable lifestyle but also taking measures by harnessing technology, making sustainable lifestyle choices, participating in community initiatives, collaborating globally, and leading policy advocacy, driving the sustainability agenda forward.
