During the Global Partnership on Artificial Intelligence (GPAI) Summit 2023, S Krishnan, Secretary, Ministry of Electronics and IT, India, highlighted the country’s potential to pioneer the development of Artificial Intelligence (AI) models and applications with global applicability, particularly in the Global South. Krishnan emphasised the necessity of creating AI models that are better tailored to the diverse needs of countries worldwide, as existing models often carry inherent biases due to limited databases.
Addressing the Summit, Krishnan asserted that India could contribute significantly by crafting AI models and applications suitable for deployment across the globe, especially in regions facing unique challenges. He identified areas like agriculture, healthcare, education, and language translation as domains where India could lead in developing AI-based digital public goods for use beyond its borders.
Krishnan expressed optimism about India’s role as it assumes the Presidency of GPAI for the year 2023, highlighting the nation’s commitment to narrowing the global divide in AI capabilities. The GPAI Summit witnessed participation from delegates representing 29 countries associated with GPAI, alongside over 150 global AI experts.
The event culminated in the GPAI New Delhi Declaration, uniting member countries in their dedication to advancing safe, secure, and trustworthy AI while pledging support for the sustainability of GPAI projects.
