On February 1, 2024, India and Nepal officially sealed agreements by signing Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) to initiate three High Impact Community Development Projects (HICDPs) in Nepal. The sectors covered by these projects encompass education, health, and culture, with an estimated combined cost of NRs 122.52 million.

The signing ceremony took place between the Embassy of India and Nepal’s Ministry of Federal Affairs and General Administration. These collaborative initiatives, supported by India’s grant assistance, aim to strengthen cultural ties between the two nations.

The three projects entail the construction of school and hostel facilities for Shree Dang-Bang Secondary School in Airawati Rural Municipality, Pyuthan district; the development of the Khamlalung Health Post Building in Aathrai Rural Municipality, Terhathum district; and the infrastructure enhancements of Chandan Bharateshwor Mahadev Temple in Chandragiri Municipality, Kathmandu. Local authorities of Airawati Rural Municipality, Aathrai Rural Municipality, and Chandragiri Municipality will oversee the implementation of these projects.

India has been actively engaged in High Impact Community Development Projects in Nepal since 2003, having undertaken over 550 such initiatives. Of these, 488 projects spanning health, education, drinking water, connectivity, sanitation, and public utilities have been successfully completed across all seven provinces of Nepal. The remaining 62 projects are ongoing and in various stages of implementation, with a cumulative cost of approximately NRs 1,220 crore (Rs 762 crore).

This ongoing collaboration underscores the comprehensive and multi-sectoral cooperation between India and Nepal as close neighbours. The High Impact Community Development Projects reflect the sustained commitment of the Government of India to support Nepal in improving the quality of life for its citizens and enhancing infrastructure in key sectors such as education, health, and culture.
