Eat Right: Have you tried making red and green dosa?

Colourful and healthy, this dosa will be loved by children

Not just delicious, the much-loved South Indian staple dosa is healthy too. Rich in carbohydrates and protein, it is gluten-free and sugar-free and serves as a wholesome meal. So, if your child is craving a tasty breakfast, dosa can be a great option.

But when the same dosa looks colourful, your child might love it even more! Deepika Dua Arora, dietician, Mutation Diet Clinic, whose child is a student at Apeejay School International, South Delhi, shared a simple recipe for making red and green dosa, using beetroot and green moong split daal, both of which can benefit children.

Beets are rich in vitamins and minerals. It promotes digestion and boosts children’s immunity. On the other hand, the fibre content in green husk also improves digestion. It is low in fat and high in protein.

Red and green dosa

Ingredients

Onion – 1/2, thinly sliced

Green moong split dal – 1/2 bowl

Garlic clove – 1

Ginger – 1/2 inch

Salt to taste

Turmeric – 1/2 tsp

Red chilli powder – 1/2 tsp

Beetroot – 1/2 , puree or grated

Coriander powder – 1 tsp

Cumin – 1/2 tsp

Curry leaves

Mustard seeds – 1/2 tsp

Lemon juice

Boiled potato (small) – 1

Method

Potato mixture

  • Heat oil in a pan.
  • Add cumin seeds, mustard seeds, curry leaves, and chopped onions. Saute for a minute
  • Add boiled potato, salt, coriander powder and red chilli powder. Mix well
  • Add lime juice

Dosa

  • Soak half a bowl of green split daal overnight. Next morning, add a little water, garlic clove and ginger. Grind it.
  • Check the consistency of the batter to ensure it is suitable for dosa. Add water if required and then add salt and seasoning
  • Divide the batter into two and add grated or pureed beetroot in one half
  • Take a non-stick pan and heat oil in it. Add one half of the batter in a semi-circular shape and then add the other half of the batter adjoining the first. Cook until it turns golden brown and crisp
  • Take a portion of the potato mixture and add it on top of the dosa. Scrap the sides and roll the dosa. Serve
