At Apeejay School, Greater Noida, excellence is a family affair. Meet Reeta Chaudhary, a dedicated criminal lawyer and mother to Anika Singh (Class 5) and Ananya Singh (Class 11) studying in Apeejay School, Greater Noida. Her husband, Sanjeev Singh, is a respected PCS officer. In a candid telephonic conversation, Reeta Chaudhary opened up about her life as a legal professional, the importance of strong family values, and why Apeejay has been the perfect educational partner in nurturing her daughters’ academic and personal growth. Read edited excerpts:

As a criminal lawyer, can you explain your field in simple words?

I primarily deal with bail matters in criminal court. It involves helping individuals who have been accused of crimes secure their release while awaiting trial. Criminal law is intense and deeply analytical. You have to understand not just the law, but human nature, too. The language is very different and requires deep study. It’s a career that demands critical thinking, empathy, and unwavering dedication.

What advice would you give a child interested in pursuing law?

Work hard – law is not easy and requires consistency.

Read extensively, especially legal texts and real case studies.

Improve your communication – writing and speaking clearly is crucial.

Stay updated with current affairs and legal reforms.

Be patient, persistent, and principled.

You mentioned you used to teach law. Tell us more.

Yes, I was a law lecturer before fully moving into legal practice. Teaching law was very fulfilling, but after we had children, I took a break to focus on my family. At that time, my husband’s role as a PCS officer also demanded a lot of his time. We decided that I would prioritise the children’s early years. Now that they’re older, I’ve resumed my professional journey in court.

What values do you, as a lawyer and mother, instill in your children?

I always tell them to be aware of their rights and speak up when something feels unfair. It’s important for children to distinguish between right and wrong. We encourage open conversations at home where our daughters feel safe expressing their thoughts. These are values I believe every child should grow up with – courage, honesty, and self-respect.
