According to Peter F Drucker: Effective leadership is not about making speeches or being liked; leadership is defined by results not attributes. Those who have leadership skills are highly sought after by employers and hence, it can significantly enhance career prospects. Strong leadership abilities can open up opportunities for promotions, increased responsibilities, and higher-level positions. Employers often look for individuals who can take charge, guide others, and make informed decisions.

Traditionally it was said ‘leaders are born, not made’. But Dr Payal Arora, Assistant Professor-Commerce at Apeejay College of Fine Arts in Jalandhar opined that of late, it is being acknowledged that most leaders are made rather than born.

“Institutes and teachers play a vital role in inculcation of leadership skills among students. The core competencies like management, awareness-self as well as social, communication skills, relationship management and decision-making abilities can be taught to students by using a systematic approach,” Dr Arora said.

And the best part is that leadership skills can be taught by providing opportunities to students in the classroom as well as through inter-class, intra-college and inter-college activities, Dr Arora said. It may include making a student group leader in group discussion, captain of team, class representative, head of student body, and in-charge of any forum or committee.

“They can also be taught leadership skills through examples and case studies of real life successful leaders. Students can learn these skills by making use of available opportunities, be it scholastic or extracurricular activities. They should be given autonomy to make decisions and provide solutions to real life problems,” Dr Arora shared.

But she is quick to point out that there are some challenges that students can face to acquire these skills. “Students face a lot of problems in pursuit of becoming leaders. They may hesitate in taking initiative or exploiting the available opportunities. Besides this, lack of communication skills, inability to handle conflicts, unsupportive behaviour of peers and lack of interpersonal skills come in the way of becoming successful leaders,” Dr Arora said.

Why learning leadership qualities is valuable

Effectiveness in managing and inspiring others: Leadership qualities help you become more effective in managing and leading a team or organisation. By developing these qualities, you can motivate and inspire others to achieve common goals, enhance team performance, and foster a positive work environment.

Building and maintaining relationships: Leadership qualities involve effective communication, empathy, and interpersonal skills. These attributes enable you to build strong relationships with colleagues, employees, and stakeholders. Building positive connections fosters collaboration, trust, and loyalty, which are crucial for achieving long-term success in personal and professional endeavours.

Problem-solving and decision-making: Leadership qualities empower you to tackle complex problems and make informed decisions. Leaders are often required to analyse situations, evaluate different perspectives, and develop strategies for overcoming challenges. By enhancing your leadership abilities, you can become a more adept problem solver and decision maker.

Inspiring innovation and creativity: Effective leaders create an environment that encourages innovation and creativity. By cultivating leadership qualities, you can inspire team members to think outside the box, take risks, and contribute their unique ideas. This leads to increased innovation.

Personal growth and development: Learning leadership qualities goes beyond professional benefits; it also contributes to personal growth and development. Leadership skills require self-awareness, continuous learning, and a positive mindset. Developing these qualities can improve your self-confidence, resilience, adaptability, and ability to navigate challenges both in your professional and personal life.

Positive influence and impact: Leaders have the potential to make a significant positive impact on the people around them, their communities, and society as a whole. By learning leadership qualities, you can become a catalyst for positive change, inspire others to reach their full potential, and contribute to the greater good.
