Famous academician and former President of Harvard, Charles William, once said, “Books are the quietest and most constant of friends; they are the most accessible and wisest of counsellors, and the most patient of teachers.”

It is popularly said, “When you open a book, you open a new world.” Books provide with a plethora of knowledge that exposes us to new ideas and improves our understanding as well as imagination. They broaden our outlook, build concentration and vocabulary in addition to informing us about anything and everything. Books also help us reduce stress and entertain us in different ways.

There are many genres of books that we can read as per our interests such as literature, fiction, non- fiction, science, epics, novels, history, mystery and many more. One can read about anything under the sun. Without books, knowledge of our past ancestors, cultures and civilisations would have been impossible. They inspire us to do great things in life and overcome failures.

One of the obvious reasons that connote the significance of books in our day-to-day existence is that they act as our greatest companions. And companions are one of the most important parts of our life. We can’t even think of living a life without a friend. Similarly, a book resembles the dearest companion that constantly inspires us to be the best version of ourselves. They even enrich us with knowledge, just like a good friend does. We can gain some significant learnings from books and they can help us in overcoming failures as well as shaping our minds.

The significance of books in our lives isn’t restricted to the knowledge it gives us. It additionally brings a change in our personalities by developing us into our better selves. Here are some of them:

1. Self- confidence

2. Better understanding of things

3. Practical thinking

4. Good vocabulary

5. Improves speaking, reading and writing skills

6. Sense of identity

In a nutshell, books not only impart us knowledge, but wisdom of all kinds. Mark Twain once said, “The man who does not read books is no better than a man who can’t.” People of all age can read books. Hence, I encourage all of you to develop a good habit of reading books, and explore the pleasures of books and reading. Step into a new world of excitement!
