In a powerful stride towards promoting environmental responsibility and aligning with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), Apeejay School, Panchsheel Park, organised an Essay Writing Competition for students of Classes IX and X recently. The event was more than just an academic exercise; it served as a platform for young minds to express their concern and responsibility towards one of India’s most revered yet endangered rivers, the Yamuna.

The theme of the competition, The Significance of a Clean Yamuna, was carefully chosen to encourage students to explore the multifaceted value of the river, not just as a physical water body but as a cultural, ecological, and spiritual lifeline. The activity was designed to inspire thoughtful reflection and responsible action in the context of environmental conservation.

The enthusiastic participation of students was a testimony to their awareness and engagement with real-world issues. Through well-researched and passionately written essays, students addressed the dire need for sustainable water management, pollution control, and the preservation of natural ecosystems. The essays beautifully blended scientific facts with emotional appeals, showing the deep understanding students have developed about the interconnectedness of human life and nature.

One of the most significant learning outcomes of this competition was the development of critical thinking and environmental literacy. Students not only delved into the historical and religious significance of the Yamuna but also investigated the current threats facing it, ranging from industrial waste and untreated sewage to excessive urbanisation. They examined government policies, grassroots movements, and citizen-led initiatives aimed at reviving the river. Through this exploration, they understood the importance of active citizenship and how even small actions at the individual or community level can contribute to large-scale environmental change.

Moreover, this initiative sharpened students’ writing and analytical skills, encouraged independent research, and fostered a sense of empathy and responsibility. It also created an avenue for meaningful discussions in classrooms about sustainability, climate action, and the long-term consequences of environmental neglect.

The competition was conducted house-wise, with students from all four houses showcasing exceptional talent and insight: Vivekananda House: 1st – Hemanya Sahni (IX B), 2nd – Sanghamitra Gautam (IX C), 3rd – Akshara Rathore (IX C); Tagore House: 1st – Tripti Sharma (X A), 2nd – Gurnaaz Kaur Birghi (X A), 3rd – Shreya Singh (IX C); Ashoka House: 1st – Tushika (IX B), 2nd – Dhanush Gautam (IX B), 3rd – Siddharth Kumar (X C); Akbar House: 1st – Ivy Ghelot (IX A), 2nd – Mohd. Muneef (X C), 3rd – Gunjit Garg (IX).

The initiative was not only a celebration of young talent but also a call to action. As these students penned their hopes and concerns for a cleaner Yamuna, they stepped into the role of young environmental advocates, ready to be the voice of change.
