She is 11 years old and studying in Class V at Apeejay School, Kharghar. She loves dancing, playing handball, reading storybooks, and trying new things. She is cheerful, hard-working, and always excited to learn. Meet Debangi Pati, a trained Bharatnatyam dancer.

In an impromptu interview, she talks about how the dance form has helped her.

You play handball and are a trained dancer. How do you balance these with academics?

I follow a small routine every day. I finish my homework first, then I go for my dance or handball practice. I also study a little every day, so I don’t have too much work at the end. My teachers and parents help me stay organised, which lets me enjoy both sports and studies.

How has Bharatnatyam training helped you?

The dance has made me more disciplined and confident. It has improved my posture, concentration, and memory. It has also taught me patience and dedication because every step needs practice.

What part of this art do you enjoy the most?

I enjoy the storytelling aspect the most. I like how expressions and movements together can show emotions and tell a full story without using words.

What inspired you to start learning dance, and how has your connection to it evolved?

I started learning because I loved classical music and watching dancers perform. Over the years, I have started understanding the meaning behind each movement and expression. Now it feels like a part of who I am.

Is there a particular performance, role, or piece that has stayed with you?

Yes, I really liked performing Alarippu or Ganesh Vandana, to name a few. I enjoyed it because the music was beautiful, and I loved expressing my emotions through expressions and hand gestures.

How does the school support you, be it dance or handball?

My school encourages me a lot. My teachers understand my practice schedules and guide me whenever I need help. The school gives me chances to participate in events, and my coaches help me improve my skills.

Advice to students on time management.

Finish your work on time and don’t leave everything for the last moment. Make a simple timetable. Give time to studies, hobbies, and rest. If you stay organised, you can enjoy everything without stress.
