The Festival of Lights holds profound significance for students across India, transcending cultural and regional boundaries to emerge as a unifying celebration. This annual extravaganza is not merely a display of dazzling fireworks and vibrant decorations; rather, it embodies a tapestry of rich traditions, deep-rooted customs, and a spirit of togetherness that resonates with students from diverse backgrounds.
Diwali, rooted in Hindu mythology, marks the triumph of light over darkness and good over evil. For students, it is a time of joyous anticipation, as the festival not only signifies the commencement of a respite from academic routines but also offers an invaluable opportunity to connect with family, partake in age-old rituals, and absorb the cultural tapestry that defines India. The essence of Diwali lies in fostering gratitude, spreading happiness, and forging enduring bonds, making it a celebration that extends beyond the realms of religion and becomes an integral part of every student’s cultural identity.
Unique Diwali Initiative for a Safer and Greener Celebration at Apeejay School, Model Town:
In a profound celebration of Diwali 2023, Apeejay School, Model Town in Jalandhar embarked on a unique initiative, focusing on the essence of the festival— the Awareness of the Inner Light. Under the dynamic leadership of Principal Mr Malkiat Singh, students took a pledge to make this Diwali not only enjoyable but also safer for all.
The day commenced with students and parents joining forces to advocate for an eco-friendly Diwali. Lining the alley leading to the school, students held thought-provoking placards, conveying messages that urged for a cracker-free celebration. The initiative aimed to spread awareness about the adverse effects of noise pollution on the health of animals, especially pet dogs.
As the morning unfolded, a seminar was conducted, featuring Ms Maninder Kaur, Social Science educator, as the resource person. She enlightened the students about the health hazards associated with burning firecrackers, emphasising the detrimental impact of air pollution caused by the smoke. The session underscored the pressing issue of pollution in today’s world and its adverse effects on the environment. Ms Kaur particularly highlighted the stress faced by pet animals due to noise pollution from crackers.
Encouraging a shift towards eco-friendly celebrations, the expert suggested alternative ways to rejoice in festivities, such as spreading smiles and joy among the less privileged instead of bursting crackers. The Principal reinforced the importance of self-awareness and encouraged students to find ways to illuminate the lives of those in darkness.
In a delightful turn of events, students from classes I, II, and III, adorned in traditional finery, shared special day meals with friends and teachers, culminating in a joyous pool lunch party. The grand initiative reached its pinnacle as saplings, generously donated by the Municipal Corporation and area councilor Ms Aruna Arora, were distributed to parents. This unique touch underlined the significance of plants in controlling pollution and mitigating environmental excesses.
Apeejay School Model Town’s Diwali initiative not only illuminated the spirit of the festival but also demonstrated a collective commitment to fostering a safer, greener, and more compassionate community.
