Rajat, a semester IV student pursuing BCom at Apeejay College of Fine Arts (ACFA), Jalandhar, recently joined more than 40 youngsters from the city on a tour around Mumbai. He was selected for the trip under the ‘Yuva Sangam’ programme, organised under the aegis of the Ministry of Culture, All India Council for Technical Education, Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bombay, and National Institute of Technology (NIT) Jalandhar.

Yuva Sangam is an initiative under the Government of India’s ‘Ek Bharat Shreshth Bharat’ campaign that conducts “exposure tours” between two states for youngsters. The youth from one state visit its paired state for an immersive experience across five broad areas — Paryatan (Tourism), Parampara (Traditions), Pragati (Development), Paraspar Sampark (People-to-people connect), and Prodyogik (Technology).

The participants, between the ages 18-30, reached Mumbai for a fully sponsored five-day tour to acquaint themselves with the culture and heritage of the city. They were hosted by IIT Bombay, which was chosen as the nodal institute for the trip.

Apart from visiting tourist hotspots, the participants toured the IIT Bombay campus, Vidhan Sabha, Vidhan Parishad, and Bombay Stock Exchange. Interactions with influential personalities like the Governor of Maharashtra, Ramesh Bais, and AICTE Chairman, TG Sitharam, added to their memorable journey. They also met Padma Shree Awardee Professor Deepak Phatak, whose valuable insights enriched their knowledge and understanding.

As part of the itinerary, the visitors went to significant landmarks like the iconic Asiatic Library and fort area, which provided a glimpse into the rich architectural heritage of Mumbai. Additionally, interacting with Maharashtrian families through the “Buddy system dinner” allowed the students to deepen their understanding of the local culture, language, cuisine, customs, and traditions.

Talking about the experience, Rajat said, “The trip was just beyond my imagination. The amenities provided were spell-binding. From staying in the IIT Bombay campus to having police protection wherever we went was fun. The best part was making new friends who are still in touch with me. I can say it was my best trip and the memories and teachings are going to stay with me my whole life.”

Dr Neerja Dhingra, principal, ACFA, appreciated Rajat for bagging this exciting opportunity and memories of a lifetime. She spoke of how proud the college was of him and wished him luck in his future endeavours. Dr Dhingra also appreciated the faculty members of the Commerce department for constantly motivating students and encouraging them to avail the best opportunities possible.
